NRA of America in London

With regard to the original posting - haven't these lectures in London by the NRA (America) been a fairly regular thing over a number of years? If so why is it now a big deal and why does the NRA need to be represented at this event. Is it just a feeling of someone poaching on my patch?

If memory serves me right the first lecture was in the Imperial War Museum many years ago following a personal invitation from the chairaman of the HBLA to a friend in the NRA who happened to be visiting London.

Perhaps the original NRA should be working towards a similar aim in the U.K.

Ideally this what gun owners and shooters have wanted in the UK for years but history has shown that there is too much vested interest in the moribund individual bodies for this to happen. There needs to be a totally new body formed with energy, vision and leadership that will represent gun owners and meaningfully develop shooting across the UK.

The issue is getting suitable people with maturity and largeness of spirit that will claim people and institutions respect to drive this vision forward.

Well at least he is now announcing he is part of the GCN unlike when he appeared as an "independant expert" infront of the parliamentary committee and kept very quiet about his association with them.

It's right though there are just too many fragmented groups in the UK to stand up and make a difference, if only you could create 1 group that appealed to all shooters then that would be a start.

Must admit that if the subject for debate is "Should the US support the United Nations small arms treaty?" I'm not quite sure why people would want NRA UK to go to it.

However that is my personal opinion not the opinion of the NRA before you all accuse the NRA of all sorts!

I am sure it will be an interesting meeting however I do not want to go for a variety of reasons, one is distance and the time of day.

I am pro gun however not in the USA sense. The USA has a different approach to guns than the UK has mainly because of it's past. In my opinion one simply cannot compare the two.

In an ideal world the UK would tidy up it's laws and regulations so that it all makes sense and is easily understood by us shooters and by the FEOs. I would like to see a decentralisation where the local FEOs deal with the local people so we all know eachother more or less. The current FAC and SGC is a must, we need the licensing and the time it takes to issue, no way do I want to see over the counter purchases like in the USA. However more than 3 weeks to issue a variation is silly.
We would be allowed to own anything under the sun. Pistols, all caliber rifles, shotguns regardless of rounds, tommy gun, anything that goes bang, the limiting factor would be where to shoot it but if one is willing to travel to Scotland or Wales in order to shoot XYZ then I can't see why one should not be allowed to own said gun.

The UK would have one organisation that represented us all. Where you got your insurance from was independent from that organisation.

I am not a fan of The Sportsman's Association, it should not stop me from going however it is at the back of my mind as a reason.

Karen I am not accusing you of muscling in. What I can't understand is why some people are panicing now over something that has been going on for a good number of years. Personally I don't see why the NRA should want or even need to attend an event run by another organisation. While the lecture may be of some interest I can't see it being earth shattering.
