Recommend a scope for 7.62x39

#1 Post by meles meles »

Well oomanses, Santa has delivered our CZ527 in 7.62x39, which looks like so:

Image

Nice piece of timber, hammer forged barrel, set trigger (obviously), 5 round magazine.

We'll be using it out to 300 mards, occasionally a little further if circumstances permit, and are thinking about a suitable scope for it. Ideally we'd like a scope with a 1" diameter tube and a dedicated reticule for the 7.62x39 cartridge. If a dedicated reticule isn't available at the right price / tube size / magnification et cetera, we'd like something with several hashes to allow us to hold over at ranges other than zero. Any suggestions ? We're thinking of a budget up to £250 though less would be nice, and a magnification of x10 or less. Fixed magnification is fine.

We quite like the AVS - MCR scope and reticule but it is a 30mm tube and not available here in the UK...

If your 527 bolt is the same as mine you will need the highest mounts you can get or a scope with a small enough eyepiece such that the bolt does not contact it. You may need a cheek riser if you do go with the highest mounts. See the pictures below, where I used high 30mm mounts for my Vortex PST. Previously, I had a 1" Leupold VX2 on there which also needed high mounts to clear the bolt.

I cannot comment on any relevant bdc reticle scopes for this calibre, but just to confirm that you are aware that they only work for a certain mass projectile (assume 123gr) travelling at a certain velocity? The first type of scope that comes to mind are the AK types but then I don't know the tube diameter and how you would mount it.

We have some high mount rings (1" tube) and knows we needs a small ocular bell to allow for the bolt throw. :)

Most of the genuine Russki scopes calibrated for the 7.62x39 use side rail mounts, which aren't really an option on this rifle. We did wonder about a Hawke 17 HMR scope as that has a very similar velocity to the 7.62x39 round and is calibrated out to around 350 mards. It won't match exactly the ballistics of the 7.62x39 but it may be close enough for plinking at gongs. Better ideas are welcome though. We suspect that pawloads in a decent bolt gun could see pretty good accuracy.

We have several of these not the top end of scopes but they work for us on the rifles they are fitted too. a .223 Remington 700 & on a 7.62x51 older Enfield target rifle.

https://uk.hawkeoptics.com/endurance-3- ... 23308.html the reticle has + for 100mards then marked 200 to 600. 3-9x40 1/4 MOA 1" tube should not need for high mounts & £210

Out to around 300m the trajectory of the 123gr 7.62x39 round isn't too far off that of a 62gr 5.56/.223.......so you could get a scope with a .223 BDC turret and remark it for 7.62 once you have dialled it in at different distances.

Once you have the turret settings/range sorted you could mark them down on a small range card for future reference, you could even tape it to the stock sniper-style!.

I have a Leupold Mark AR 6-18x40.

Cracking little scope.

And Leupold offer a free custom turret in addition to the 55gr .223 on it already. Its on my stalking rifle so I asked for one to match my .308 stalking ammo and they are looking at getting it done in time for me to pick up at Shot Show.

All free of charge.

So - get a Leupold and get a custom turret !

How about one of the yugo Zrak scopes as fitted to the M76 rifle? 4x mag with the posp style chevron reticle. The elevation turret is set up for 8mm Mauser, not sure how that compares to 7.62x39mm at shorter ranges?

Here's one I've got for my yugo Mauser resting on my 527.

If you're interested they can be found on eBay, generally in Serbia.
