Rimmed cartridges can, if carelessly loaded, lock together and jam. Also, they would require a new bolt face and extractor for our DTA...

If it locks due to "careless loading" that's operator error, not a fault of the cartridge.

I'd have thought that as a battle rifle cartridge, anything in the design that can lead to operator error is a significant issue given!

It obviously was not a problem or they would have changed it.
It went a long way to helping us win two world wars so history contradicts your view.
I see plenty of jams with rimless cartridges so an non issue.
For automatic firearms design I can see some benefit in the rimless cartridge.
