Original factory finishes were either Suncorite paint or blued, so a grey finish will reduce value to someone interested in an as-issued rifle, yes.

On the sling, the nipples of the rivets should face inwards and the claws of the hooks should point outwards.

Large numbers of Longbranch rifles were parkerised, and Savage however I'll stand corrected on those.
What is a Sapper? This versatile genius condenses the whole system of military engineering and all that is useful and practical. He is a man of all work of the Army and the public ready to do anything or go anywhere, in short, he is a Sapper.

Originally, all five factories blued the rifles, but on Savage this is only found on very early Mk1 production.

However, once volume production got underway, various finishes were approved. BSA, Maltby and Long Branch stuck with bluing (or black-bluing), Fazakerley used bluing and an early version of suncorite paint, Savage used grey phosphating/parkerising. This Savage finish frequently wears thin, making it seem as if the rifle has been stripped.

Later yet, Long Branch and Fazakerley used a greenish phosphate/parkerisation for some new builds and a lot of factory rebuilds.

Finally, Fazakerley refurbished about a million or so rifles in 1949-55 using some green phosphate and then predominantly Suncorite, and produced all new rifles with Suncorite finish.

So, there are quite a few "factory original" finishes possible....

Some of EFD's haven't even made it out of the wrapper from when they were built 60 years ago.....and they sell nothing but Lee Enfield's
