Hi guys I'm looking for some of your knowledge on the Lee enfield no4.I'm going to pick one up but stuck trying to pick one.are the savage made one's any good and also are the pof ones any good.thanks guys

If I were back in the market place for one I would look for a good Long Branch example.

However a good example of any of them, is a good example!

Mine's a Savage and it's excellent - decently made and shoots well.

Nothing wrong with a Savage made No.4.

One thing to look out for though, is that there is no damage/excess wear to the slot, cut into the receiver rail where the bolt head slots into. Otherwise, the bolt head can jump out of the slot when you cycle the bolt.

British made No.4's have a bolt release button not a cut-out.

Find a good one and they are great rifles.

My Savage No4 is in MK1 configuration with the MK1 Bolt release catch rather than the MK1* bolt rail cut out.

The difference refers to the mark of the no 4 not the manufacturer.

Nothing wrong with any make of Enfield so long as the condition is good.

Hi I'd like to clarify something.is it only the mk1 that has the bolt release catch and not the mk2.

The bolt release catch was used on all British made No4 Mk1's and the later hung trigger Mk2's. It was used on initial production North American (US and Canadian), then dispensed with in 1942 for the simple cut out slot instead.

All the usual stuff in buying a No4, check crown/throat erosion, head space, bore and bedding, look for cracks in the woodwork around the bedding blocks area, check the trigger is two stage (possible bedding issue if it isn't, or a notch has been been filed off).

Always worth taking a couple of fluted silver/red drill rounds along to see if it feeds and extracts cleanly and that the bolt isn't too sloppy... (not inerts as it might get a few pulses racing)

No.4 Mk.I, Mk.I/2 and Mk.2 rifles all had the catch. Mk.I* and I/3 rifles did not.
