7.62X39 HEAVY BULLET

#1 Post by Alpha1 »

I have given up trying to buy full metal jacket bullets in 123/125 grain .311 for this rifle.

Can any body tell me if it will work with a 170grain or a 174grain flat base .311 bullet. Or even a boat tail 155grain Amax perhaps.
Its a Australian arms thingy in 7.62x39. Thought one of you guys with a ballistic program might be able to run the numbers.

Why have you given up trying to buy the lighter .311 FMJ's?

So far, 150gn bullet is the heaviest load data I've found.

I believe the Russians had special purpose 190gn subsonic ammunition in 7.62x39 - so it should be possible.

There's quite a bit of load data about for this cal with heavy, 160 to 170gn cast bullets.

What's the rifle like? I've always fancied one but rarely see them for sale....
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

I can not find any body who sells them. Last time I tried to buy them I phoned Kranks who assured me he stocked them I drove 2 hours to his shop when I arrived he had one box with 90 bullets in. No body in my neck of the woods stocks them. I have been shooting cast boolits through it but I still want to have a play with full metal jackets but I have not been able to get any so I decided to try a heavier bullet in .311/.312 because I all ready have them on the shelf for the .303.

I shoot it with a 165grain cast boolit with good results at 100yds. Mine is a cracking rifle it shoots really well and it was cheap as chips to buy. Great fun I have had mine a while. You don't see many of them about.

What about about 32 cal pistol bullets? Don't know about availability and you'd have be careful as the diameter can vary from .311 to .313 - just a thought.

S&B do a 123 grain .311 - I did have a look for some here however all I found was half of one... There were dozens of boxes of the things on the shelf when I brought mine however that was a couple of years ago.
