Advice needed regarding a scope

As my poor old eyes get even more old and tired I am looking to putting a scope on my 7.62 No4 Lee Enfield Envoy (Palma Match).

I will use one of Fulton's excellent mounts but I know nothing about scopes and need some advice as to what to use.

Ideally I would like to be able to shoot it a long range, 900/1000 yards but I do not want to spend a fortune putting a scope on a 40+ year old rifle.

Your advice would be most welcome.

Targetman, do these mounts require you do drill the receiver? As the owner of a No5 with a drilled receiver I would suggest another solution.

Contact Fox Firearms (www.foxfirearmsuk.com) and buy one of his 8-32 Chinese scopes.

At around £100 they are excellent for your purpose and if anything goes wrong, Brian Fox will give you a new one - but to date, he's only had one back and that had been damaged by the owner.

When it comes to scope mounts for the No4 especially if you aspire to shooting at the longer ranges then my mount of choice is the Armalon, pricey but no gunsmithing required and it is angled to give your scope the elevation it will need out 1000 yrds as some scopes don't have enough elevation for that distance, something worth checking before buying a scope.

Would you spend a fortune putting a scope on a year old rifle?

If so why the difference?

I have one of Fulton excellent scope mounts. It flits between my number 4 and no5 Enfields. As you know no gunsmithing required. The scope in the picture is a Zeiss diatal 6x40. I am a firm believer in the old adage you get what you pay for, ask any stalker how many pairs of Bino's he bought before he bit the bullet and bought a good pair. Same applies to rifle scopes. I have yet to squint down any cheapo that compares favourably with my Zeiss, Swarovski, or Nightforce. As Dromia points out make sure any scope you are considering buying has enough internal elevation adustment to get you out to the desired range. Not familiar with the Armalon scope mount, but I'm guessing it will be a nice bit of kit, and if it has the built in ramp to give the required elevation it will widen your choice of scopes. If you can find a gunshop frequented by Stalkers you may be able to pick up a bargain second hand scope at a reasonable price.. Andersons of East Grinstead comes to mind.

You might want to consider a variable power magnification scope. especially useful at longer ranges. where You can take advantage of the higher magnification when conditions are suitable, but if mirage becomes a nuisance you can wind the power down to minimise the effect. My Nightforce is 5.5-22 magnification.

No there isn't, it rests on the receiver bridge and is as solid as a rock. I have one to mount my scope on my stalking rifle which gets some rough usage at times and the mount has been excellent.

Evidently from Jenks's post Fultons have copied the Armalon design.
