DeLisle carbine

Today I held a little bit of history in my hands and I got to shoot it .

It was my clubs biannual competition shoot today we always have a raffle for charity , the RBL Poppy appeal , the first ten winners got to shoot 5 rounds using the DeLisle carbine in 45 ACP . Its owned by the author of the rifleman web sight , I was lucky for once and had a winning ticket .

This was our .22 comp using the old army training targets to simulate the Methuen shoot . I managed a gold medal for the scoped rifle match so Iam a happy bunny tonight .

The targets we use are rapid and precision shots , the top 2 - shot prone the middle 3 prone kneeling and standing , the bottom line is prone , right hand targets , is 2 shots on each in 10 seconds , I was using my BSA MkII International . 193 x 200

Out of interest what was it like to fire?

Peter Starley had one in when I visited his place a couple of months ago. After very high expectations I was a little underwhelmed to be honest, it felt a bit heavy and un-balanced.

They certainly have a very interesting history, and they look amazing. I think that there are two or three companies selling them at the moment. They are newly made using SMLE components, I think that they are around the £2K mark new. Someone at our club got one from Bates's in Stafford but I havent' seen it. Originals are as rare as hens teeth and virtually un-obtainable.

I have heard of some of the repros being made but not always that good , but thats only hearsay .
The bolt was exactly as you would expect of a SMLE so no surprises there , balance I found perfect , reload at the hip and straight into the shoulder and on the sights . It was very quiete most of the noise was the back plate , I shot it without hearing protection and is was not a problem . No recoil to speak of , a pussycat to handle .

Dave I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but looking at your target you were either crossing lanes - not that that's ever happened at the Mini Methuen - or Brer Terence gave you blanks to shoot! :shakeshout:

Dave where do you get the Mini Metheun Targets from?

Dave, good write up on a fascinating rifle. I thought the original DeLisle would be classified as Section 5 these days given the length of the barrel, was this an S5 rifle or had it been barreled?
