Rifle cleaning

#1 Post by Hauptman »

Before shooting, I always shove a clean patch through the barrel and then mop out the chamber with a quick drying solvent to remove any traces of oil.

Anyone else do this? What solvent do you use?

I just mop out don't use any solvent.

If I want to degrease anything then Simple Green is my go to degreaser/cleaner.

I am the same as Dromia. Unless the gun is going away for a while it only gets a very light coat of preserving.

I used to use all manner of 'degreasers' but now dry patches until it looks and smells clean.

I always leave my rifles lightly oiled. Before firing I push as many dry patches as it takes to ensure it's dry before the first round goes down.

Interesting.................... I've always thought that the chamber and case should be totally oil free, so that the case will grip the chamber on detonation.
I mop the chamber out with Tectane brake cleaner, £2-50 ish for a 400ml aerosol can from Toolstation.

I generally leave my bore and chamber completely dry and free of any oil during the season (March - October) as I generally shoot often enough that there's no chance for any issues. Over winter I leave a very thin film of oil in the bore, but not in the chamber as I practice twice a week on a SCATT for 11 months of the year and I don't want to transfer oil to the snapcap and then back to the chamber when taking dry shots before a practice or match.

Cheers,

I dont think its because of the 'grip' as such, where will the brass go if its ermmm 'slips'? It's because oil doesn't compress and that raises the (theoretical) risk that you could over-pressure if there is a lot of of it swilling about in the chamber and your load is hot....also heard it said that it can make a sight difference to point of impact.

I'd acknowldge that I'm not suoer-anal about my rifles, I clean them sometimes with whatever I have in the cupboard. In my expereince a thin coat of the oily-stuff makes sod-all difference so I'm not especially picky about it, but I can see why others are.
