Ammo storage in cabinet lock top

Hi, just sent my joint FAC/SGC application off and awaiting call from FEO. Meanwhile I am considering either a Brattonsound 6/7 extra deep or DJS cabinet 7/9 with locking top.

Does anyone know roughly how much rifle ammo will fit in these? I've asked for 600/500 each of .303 and .308/7.62 on the form along with some 22LR but very conscious it'll need to fit in the box.

Potentially 1200 rounds of FB ammo. I think you may struggle to secure them all. For a little extra, buy a large ammo safe from Argos/B&Q etc and have that fitted at the same time as your gun safe. That way, as the bug bites hard and you add more firearms, you will have plenty capacity for ammo.

+1 on a digital combination safe, I keep my ammo and keys for the rifle cabinets in there which then solves the isdue of where to keep them...simples :goodjob:

My recommendation would be to separate the firearms from the ammo completely.

My choice was the tall extra-deep Brattonspound (Scopes and muskets to store) and one of these

For my ammo.

I decided against a 'cheap' digital safe for key storage but will be fitting an 'old fashioned' dial combination key safe in a 'secret' place.

Play it safe with ammo storage-get the biggest safe you can afford because i bet you'll be sticking in a variation at some point to add more.I use a Brattonsound pistol safe which is plenty big enough for all the calibres.

A lot of digital combination safes that you can buy on the highstreet are pretty trivial to crack, so I really would not recommend them for storing ammunition or safe keys. Google "breaking into digital safes" for handy hints and tips!

Most of the videos for this require you to strike the top of the safe or drop it, good safe placement and securing would prevent this

Dombo63 - I think you'd struggle to get that amount of ammo in a safe top ammo box. I've got an INFAC 9 gun extra deep safe with a lock top box and i mainly shoot milsurp ammo which just comes it round-touching-round cardboard boxes and i doubt i could get more than 1000rds in. If you buy commercial ammo its usually in far bigger packaging and you could probably half that.

Thanks all. Yes i did think it might be a squeeze, especially with the bolts in there as well. And chances are i'd never have more than a couple of hundred rounds of the full-bore ammo at any one time lying around. Shall discuss with the FEO as no doubt he'll scale me back.

Safe bouncing is one way of doing it, but I was really thinking of some of the ways of defeating them revolving around the electronics. There are certain key combinations and other tricks which will (allegedly) work.

What about bolting the safe in place upside down?
