First Shoot of The Cheapo Enfield

#1 Post by Blu »

Well some may remember that a while I came across an Enfield No4 Mk1 that I found in a pawn shop. Today I took it out for it's first shoot, I loaded up a mix of Speer 150Grn Soft points and Sierra 180Grn Pro Hunters.

Windy day today, wind around 15 - 20 MPH. Seeing how it was the first shoot I removed the peep sight and scoped the rifle. I was shooting for groups rather than bull just to see what the rifle liked and if it would group. Shooting at 200 yards, the best group came from the Sierra bullets with 33.6Grns of XMR 2495. So I reckon this rifle is a keeper.

After I have fine tuned loads I am going to remove the scope and put the peep sight back on the rifle

How much do .303 canned bangs cost on your side of the pond?

Crikey Blu that is some impressive shooting from the .303 indeed, did it have any bad manners at all?

Ovenpaa, nope she was as sweet as anything and a pleasure to shoot. I kept checking for pressure signs and found nothing though saying that all loads were within the load data specs. I aim to load up a few more rounds this weekend and see what she is like at 300, 400 and 500 yards. BTW she has been officially christened Mabel (Maltby Mabel) Looks like I got a good one for the price I paid. Apart from all the grud that was in the barrel I believe this rifle hasn't been shot much at all.

Oh one more thing, I changed the stock and the butt on the rifle. A couple of years back I broke my leg and was laid up for about 6 weeks and was slowly going nuts, well I had this stock and butt set that I been given by a fella I shot with, can't remember where he said he got it. Anyways while I was laid up I decided to pretty the set up a little. I used a steam iron to get the few dings in the wood out and then applied Birchwood-Casey Stock Oil with a light sanding between coats. The stock and butt turned out really nice and because I will scope the rifle when hunting I bought an Enfield "T" type wooden cheekpiece from Numrich and put that on. The rifle looks real pretty now with a beautiful satin sheen to the stock.

Very impressive shooting, especially if the woodwork was a hot swap! Looks like that's a rifle to hang onto.
