Some times the little things really get to you....!!!

#1 Post by Sim G »

Right, I make no bones about it, I'm a Leupold fan. I have five scopes mounted on different guns, all of them Leupolds of one description or another, from a Vari-X II to a Mk 4 and all things in between. All the scopes are fitted with Leupold Alumina flip up covers and I have Alumina enhancers and rain guards. I even have a Leupold Leatherman Micra on my key ring....

I have a lovely set of binos. Leupold again. 10x40 Tactical. Phenominally clear lens, ultra fast focus and even has a mil-dot scale etched onto the left lens for range finding. Brilliant.

Then, for some reason, I'm looking at the embossed serial number. There's another word in front of the serial and I can't quite make it out. It's only about 1mm high and very lightly stenciled, unlike the deep and bold serial number.

Hang on a minute, I try with a magnifying glass and there it is...... "CHINA"!!!!!

I can't believe it! They're made in bloody China! Now don't get me wrong, these are a cracking set of binos. The lenses are first rate and the build quality of them, just like it's neck strap and cordura case, are first class, but I feel cheated!! I even checked the box they came in (I'm sad like that, that I have all of the boxes....) Nowhere on the box does it say "China" or "Made in". The scope boxes all declare "Proudly Made in the USA", but not so on the binos box.....

I'm now a tad deflated and not so enthused as I was about my binos now...... (sad ba$tard......!!)
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Sim,

It is one of the worst kept secrets that the scopes are also made in China - in the same factory that is selling the knock off ones ones on 'tinternet!

My scopes or their boxes are marked up "USA", which is why the binos came as such an annoyance.....

My mates knock off Mk4 is a surprisingly good piece of kit on his rimfire, but it doesn't compare to my genuine one.

I'll dig out the link - something like 85% of the components are manufactured in China and only assembled in the USA.

All their Rangefinders and Bino's are made in China full stop.

I am a Leupold fan too, with a few nice scopes and a new rangefinder!

On a similar note.........
Chickens. I had heard that a lot of the "fresh" chicken consumed in the UK is actually farmed in Thailand wtfwtf and shipped over here. As long as it has been processed over here (after its mega journey) then it qualifies for a sticker on the packaging that proudly proclaims "produce of the UK"
I wonder how many folks think they are helping the UK economy and farmers by buying a chicken with a cute little tractor and a Union Jack on the package!
