K98 Sharpshooter (The rifle not me)
Well, here it is.
This is my AR 42 K98 which came with a sweated on original mount base, so i decided to find an orirginal ZF41 type 1 scope to go with it.
The scope was purchased from the U.S and is a 1.5 power type 1 marked JVE, the mount has DUV with the Inspection mark which made the AR42 Rifle "Correct" for the scope. Sometimes you pay not only the price for an original scope , but also you have to deal with the aging, the scope is a little foggy but still okay for me to use for shooting. The recticles apparently are painted on them I am told. There are repros with the crystal clear lenses, but well you know.

o and off topic, this is for you G11 or K31 guys . Ammozone has a load of this in. Also got hold of some Singapore stamped 7.62x51 tracer
Re: K98 Sharpshooter (The rifle not me)
Nice bit of kit, very glad you refrained from calling it a sniper rifle...
You can get the scope fully serviced for about £65 - it will come back like new - PM me for the name of the firm doing it.

Re: K98 Sharpshooter (The rifle not me)
great looking rifle mate , is it easy to get a good sight picture with the scope so far away ?
and are you reloading for the 8mm ?
:goodjob:

Thanks, takes some getting used to, but yeah I can see how these aided the soldier for a quick pop up and shot.Again a clean lense would help as well.idge wrote:great looking rifle mate , is it easy to get a good sight picture with the scope so far away ?

I am reloading for the 8mm, but the powder i have H4350 was too slow burning for the SMK200g bullets I used and lack legs. So as an experiment I pulled the heads from some yugo surplus that I know pushes the bullets out to where I want them, re-weighed each charge of the flakey powder and put in the SMK's, shoots suprisingly well. (Until I get some better powder)

Re: K98 Sharpshooter (The rifle not me)
interesting i've never tried H4350 im currently using vv n140 but i dont think it fills the case enough i have some n160 so im gona give that ago , what was the weight of the powder charge in the surplus rounds ?
Re: K98 Sharpshooter (The rifle not me)
The H4350 due to its density fills the case just past the neck with me following the hodgson guide of no more than 55gr. At 800 yards POI was some 6foot lower compared to the surplus yugo and the PPU Match that I normally use.idge wrote:interesting i've never tried H4350 im currently using vv n140 but i dont think it fills the case enough i have some n160 so im gona give that ago , what was the weight of the powder charge in the surplus rounds ?
I spent hours preping ,rezising, trimming etc and was rather Peed off with the end results, thats reloading I suppose.
The Yugo POI was highest of the lot with its original 198g bullet, hence why I did a swap. Yugo is £28 a 100, SMK bullets I think £25-£30, PPU is I think £55-£60 a 100. So basically I wanted to see if I could use the good working charge with a better BC bullet, thus not needing to resize, trim, priming spend ages etc etc. So all I do is pull the bullets and reseat the SMK, fire them off and just keep the brass and weigh it all in one day. So far seems okay.
I am going to try a new powder (IMR 4064,BLC) Use the PPU brass and will try a lighter bullet i.e something like a 180gr maybe.
PS The surplus charge was 42gr and did NOT fill the whole case, flakey old skanky powder !
Re: K98 Sharpshooter (The rifle not me)
where will you source 180g 323 bullets and who makes them i've only ever been able to find 198 or 200 grain bullets ?
Re: K98 Sharpshooter (The rifle not me)
The best ammunition i've ever stuck through my K98 were old machine gun rounds (you could see where they'd been de-linked) of 1945 vintage. They were greasy, dirty and looked like they'd sat in an old oily toolbox for years, but they were insanely accurate.I do have some Yugo from C&G which is ok and also have some Privi match too which is excellent, but still not as good as the crappy looking stuff!
