Sig 522 paint quality

#1 Post by Citereh »

Hi all,

I picked up a brand new Sig 522 on Saturday just gone, and I've noticed around the cartridge ejection port and the cocking handle port a bit of the black paint slightly coming off exposing the silver metal underneath and to me it looks a bit crap, being a perfectionist.

I was just wondering if this is to be expected or should I be concerned with quality of the finish being that it's only had 100 rounds through it and cost me £800 quid etc?

Any advice appreciated, I can get photos if required to show exactly how much, but as I stated it is only very slight but worried it might get worse.

Thanks!

No

Sounds very defective - must have been a Monday morning gun

Send it to me & I'll take an angle grinder to it for you.... :good:

I've got a 522 SWAT and I've put thousands of rounds through it - there is no paint coming off mine!

At GBP800 take it back and see what the shop says, if they tell you they all do that point them to this thread and ask for some money back, they get it Duracoated/Cerakoted in a colour of your choice.

Welcome to the forum BTW :good:

AND see my other post about ordering in some Duracoat from the USA, just in case you need some (yes, they DO make a pink shade...)

If there is bright shiny silver metal underneath the paint work that is coming off, then it sounds like the metal hasn't been 'keyed' to allow the paint a sound surface to adhere to. I would have thought that the metal would have been bead/sand blasted or chemi-dipped prior to any paint finish to stand any chance of adhesion.
Have a word in the vendors ear.

I just checked my 522 that has had a few more than 100 rounds through it, can't see any signs of the finish coming away around the cocking handle though. To be honest I wouldn't worry about that, if you are concerned then either send it back or touch it up yourself.

Now then you paid 800 quid for this rifle ($1225). Dude at that price it should be gold plated, a basic Sig 522 goes for around 320 quid over here so someone somewhere is making a nice profit on these in the UK.

Looks more like something has been scraped along the edge! I dont know anything about these Sig 522's but could something like the cocking lever be fouling slightly (if too much pressure is applied downwards when cocking?)
It would niggle at me if I had brought it new but I would probably disguise it somehow and not bother to take it back
-but thats because I am typically English when it comes to complaining (and lazy!)

A permanent black marker pen goes a long way to covering such marks if all else fails.
