Places to shoot in or near the North East?
Must be great to live near Bisley or a full bore range that's actually available!.
Up here in the sunny (freezing) North East there's only the MOD Ponteland and Otterburn ranges, my club has about 1 range date a month (if that) and it's almost 7 weeks until I can next use my Steyr .308 :cool2:
I'd love to be able to shoot at 100m and have the time to do some proper load evaluations and other tests instead of a few 3 shot groups under time constraints due to available range space/time.
Is there anywhere that I could do this within say 50 miles of the Durham/Newcastle area?. I know there are various indoor and outdoor ranges around the country where you can book range time and could try and manage an overnight stay if that was possible.
I know the other option would be shooting on cleared land but my FAC is only conditioned for target shooting as part of my clubs activities.

Warcop isn't a million miles from you... 54.5 to be precise! I shoot there with the Red Rose Rifle Club, although there isn't really a 100m point!

You could contact Consett Rifle Club to see when/where they're shooting?

Darlington R& P club shoot at Battle Hill i think;

I'd suggest shooting with 3 Counties but i think we're now sharing the Ponteland range on the same days now? Next 3 dates are 20/05/12, 24/06/12 and 22/07/12

The best Range for that within your catchment is 6c the ETR range at Wathgill Catterick it goes back to 300 and you can put stick ins up too.
I shoot there with the Durham Constabulary gun club usually once a month, sometimes they cannot get 6c so its usually 6A or Sturdy house field firing range. Each day is a guest day to so non members can come along, not sure what the fee is.
I actually joined Diggle for the same reasons you have outlined, its outside your catchment but with three of us going down in a car regularly its cheaper that going to Catterick separately which is what we all used to do the only extra is the two hours travelling time.
I'm going to check out Felton up Alnwick way in the next month or so but maybe there is someone here who shoots there who can give better info but they do have a 100 yrd range I believe.

Thanks to everyone :)
Catterick is certainly do-able for me, I have problems driving over 30-45mins due to joint problems etc.

I am a member of Felton and District rifle club - we have an indoor 25 yd range with 4 lanes at Felton (only .22) and an outdoor 100yd range on a quarry near Alnwick - BUT this is not certified for CF except gallery rifle pistol calibres. Can use black powder etc.Dromia wrote:

Let me know if you want any more info

My son-in-law was curate in Ponteland, now a vicar in Newcastle and we often drove past MoD Ponteland with me having one eye on the range flags... Otherwise I wish you success and fully understand your frustration in trying to focus on load testing, probably over a chronograph, when you're on a live club day with everyone on the FP wanting to get their bobsworth.

Three Counties, St Georges, Louisa Gun Club, City of Newcastle and Tyne Valley Clubs all shoot at Ponteland (I shoot there with 3 Counties). I suggest you try one of them.tikkathreebarrels wrote:My son-in-law was curate in Ponteland, now a vicar in Newcastle and we often drove past MoD Ponteland with me having one eye on the range flags... Hi Roger smile2
I already did, 3 Counties said not taking any more members, same at Louisa where I shot for several years in the 80s and I'm in the Tyne Valley club :)

You could try Bollinbroke. You need to be within a limited mileage of their home base to meet there territorial requirement!
Griff in the Consett Club might help - pm me if you want details of the secretaries.
