Lower barrel band K98

#1 Post by froggy »

Salut,

What do you think of the lower barrel band on this DOT43 please ?
Does it look like an original part consistant for a rifle made in 1943 to you ?
I have seen this type on a BYF 44 but the front band was of the welded (3 pts) type.

Image

The rifle has been reblued .
thanks,

Hi,

Found it, after awhile searching, the lower barrel band is from a Yugoslavian Post War Production Mauser K98, and not from a WW2 dated German Mauser.

So IMO not original...

German bands have a groove running around them.

Salut Bnz,

Many thanks for looking :good:
What makes you think it is yugo as in made for yugo rifle more than used on yugo rifle ?
To me it looks very late german 2WW exactly the type you are supposed to find on semi-Krieg or full KriegModell.

This photo illustrates my problem

You can zoom in and see the same band used by the same factory but with a later front band, which to me make perfect sense.
With the rifle I am currently looking at, my prob is that the front band looks kosher for a 43 dated rifle but I would have expected that type of lower band on a slightly later production ?

Hi,

I am no expert on K98's, but the NRA example looks to have been fitted with a re-enforced grenade firing band.

Cheers, John.

re-
you 100% correct John , a splendid gewehrgranatgerat with the aiming aid :good: but those are to be fitted on any rifle, it does not require any modification. I dont think the NRA K98 is fitted with "re-enforced" band, I think they are normal late war stamped pattern ?

Dont bang the small narrow spring clip that runs from the front 2 bands on anything hard-they have a tendency to snap.Mine did couple years back and they're as rare as hens teeth.
