This is a bit of video I shot this week when trying out a cheap night scope rig on my .22.
I have cobbled together a set-up using an "Aldi/Lidl" night scope costing £120. This is the one

The idea of the system is simple. Just fit a small laser pointer to your rifle and adjust it so it is lined up with the point of impact at say 40 yds, then fit the night viewer so you can see the laser and what you are pointing at – Bang.
Now, of course you can’t compare a £120 lash up with a dedicated night scope, but then it’s only about 10th the price, however, a couple of the plus points of this scope are that it has a video output jack so you can plug in a camcorder and it is not harmed by using it in daylight. Also it has two ¼ Whitworth mounting threads, so is comparatively easy to make up a mounting bracket.
This was to be my first trial so I set off, full of hope to my usual small plot. It was just getting dark but both the moon and Jupiter were shining brightly. I switched on the scope and, resting on the field gate, I slowly scanned the area. Yes, I could see rabbits, several within about a 60 yard radius, this was looking promising. I had aligned the laser up and sighted it in at 35 yards in daylight so I was fairly confident it would be ok. I selected suitable candidate at around 40 yards, clear as a bell through the scope, and switched the laser on – Arr! A blinding flash through the scope viewfinder – The laser beam was hitting the foresight hood and scattering light back through the lens, I hadn’t noticed this during the day. Well, can’t be much of a job to slip the foresight hood off, it’s only a spring clip, I thought. Would it budge? Not at all. Should I try and lever it off with my car keys? I had visions of it pinging off, never to be seen again. I decided I would have a re-think and come back another day but before I packed up I would have another scan round the fields.
Peering through the lens I could make out, about 300 yds away, a couple of blobs that I knew shouldn’t be there, I knew there shouldn’t be any livestock in the field so I thought I would take a closer look, judging by the way they were moving I was pretty sure they were deer.
I carefully selected a route that would bring me round behind a small wood and down wind of the deer. While I was behind the wood the deer were out of sight and although I was moving slowly and as quietly as I could, my heart nearly stopped when a woodpigeon exploded, with a clatter of wings, from an Oak tree just above my head. I thought then that any chance of seeing the deer again was gone but I pressed on and as I came over a small rise, there just in front of me I could see a pair of ears about 60 yards away. I set my old camcorder recording through the scope and watched them for about 15 minutes. They seemed very alert but walked up to within about 20 yds of me before they twigged I was there. All in all, quite an experience.
