Long shots with older rifles

#1 Post by ovenpaa »

One for the wood and iron brigade, what sort of distances do you shoot out to and with what cartridge and how do you do? Any results are good at any distance!

Longest I've shot is 600 yards with;

SMLE
P14
G98

Using surplus .303 I can hit the board, but it is scattered to say the least, and some miss completely.

The surplus 7.92mm stuff seams to be more accurate, I can normally pull off a mag-pie ring with it, I even get a few V-bulls

Using my homeload .303 - 180g S&B, 43.5g of H414, I can put all shots in the black, if I really try. But I've never been into the whole shooting MoA stuff, I can do it, as I've been behind many AIs and target rifles, but for my classic stuff, I like to just lob a round into the black. It's hard enough with iron sights just to place a shot at a tiny black circle without worrying about sub-groups

I shoot prone with a front-support.

Regularly shoot out to 1000yds with my P14 and No4. The P14 out performs the No4 at all distances. Both rifles are fitted with target rearsights when shooting over 600yds. Bullets are Sierra 174 Matchkings driven at 2600fps, a bit faster than MKV11 ball but a lot more accurate. Holding the Inner at long range with these rfiles is what it is all about. The P14 will hold a group slightly larger than the bull at 1000yds, the No4 significantly larger. When you consider that in the days of .303 the bull at long range was 36 inches instead of todays 24 inches, i am not doing too bad. With a blade foresight changing light conditions are a real problem. The old saying 'lights up sights up, lights down sights down' really comes into its own at long range.

I have used all my SMLEs out to 900 yards with quite fair results using Prvi ammo. I have also used my Lithgow SMLE heavy barrel "range rifle" out to 1000 yards with handloads (RG 174s & 42 grns N140) and on one occasion in perfect light and no wind managed a 48X50. All have target sights fitted.

Also used my Mosin Nagant sniper (PE scope) at 900 yards all in the black with some ease.

Kenny, that's terrible. How could you mount a scope on that schmidt rubin? I hope you didn't need to hack into or drill that fine rifle.

I regularly shoot out beyond 1200-1300yds with my 'modern' rifles and out to 1000 with my older rifles.

I have a thing for P14's as well. First shot I took with mine was at 800 yards on battle sights, all that was needed was to correct for wind, other than that is was within one MOA of the water line, cracking rifle :good:

Kenny what is that mount, is it over bore of off center, and where did you get it from? I am thinking of putting a scope on mine. Thats a tidy looking rifle

Longest distance i've personally shot is 600mtrs at Barton.

Enfield no4 303:lovley at this distance. The front blade sight is slender enough to see your target and the Privi cartridge is fine at this range.Never tried my homeloads at this distance though.

Mauser K98 7.92:Great,but mine curiously shoots better with milsurp ammo and the rougher looking the better. :G

M91 Nagant 7.62:Not good at this distance. The front post sight is too thick-i cant see the target.
