Some 25 years ago, a friend of mine phoned me to say he had discovered a MG 34 in the Dives river here. He said he put it in diesel fuel to clean and asked me if I was able to take it in parts...So we dod. The gun retained about 80% of its original finish, the only apparent damage was the bakelit grips deformed by the stay in water. All springs, even the small ones in the trigger were in perfect condition. I passed a brooner brush in the barrel. Except a some 5cm long pitting right in the middle, the rest of the barrel was 'spiegelblank'.. I am sure we could have fed a link in it and fired it.
Parts in earth or water are litle affected by corrosion who start immediately on contct with the air, or bacterial effect.
Now, prospection is since long forbidden in the area, but sometimes miracles are still happening...
