Open ticket........ no land previously!
Certificates are up for renewal. FEO is coming round Thursday, but already had a "chat" over the phone. I've stuck in for another 5 variations, and it doesn't look like that will be a problem. However, as is my usual, I've dropped somethng in which is giving him cause for thought!!!
I've told him I want an open ticket for my .22s for vermin! However, I don't currently have a "permission"....
I live in the South East. Land is of a premium and shooters guard their "permissions" jealously. I get invites all the time for a "wander and a pop" over mates' permissions, but trying to get in on them usually causes a "frosty" reception. Whenever I do go, I'll take a shotgun of some description, but a rifle would be so mch better.
I've had an FAC and SGC for some 25 years. Extensive experience with all types of firearms in the military, police and at club and competition level. I reckon I have the "good reason" for such a condition. It'll be an interesting conversation. I wonder if I'm pi$$ing in the wind......?

In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Re: Open ticket........ no land previously!
Have you ever had a semi open FAC...you know, over land deemed suitable...for fox/medium quarry?
I've never heard of anyone going straight to open, apart from those with 12,000 acres in Scotland and a title.
You need permission (good reason) and perhaps a mentor.
Presumably you know all about ricochet risk, back drop, protected species etc...you arrogant blighter!

Re: Open ticket........ no land previously!
Rob, yeah, fully aware of back-drop, ricochet etc. It's for rabbit mainly with a few mates. Like I said, I always use the shotguns whenever I'm out shooting with mates, but a rifle would be better.....
Mentors and permissions..... bah! I'll ask my FEO why he thinks that's appropriate, especially when he's phoned me before for advice!! :55:
Anyway, I love to throw these low ballers into the mix! Remember the screw in rifled choke question? It kept him busy for weeks!
Still, as me nana used to say, "Shy bairns get nee cake!"

Hope you get it ... if they have any worries they will let you know best route to obtaining same.

Re: Open ticket........ no land previously!
I say go for it Simon, you have nothing to loose and it will be interesting to hear how your FEO feels about it, you may be pleasantly surprised.
Re: Open ticket........ no land previously!
I argued for open FAC on the grounds that I was sick and tired of having to ring up to check land on the Gower and elsewhere as suitable for 223rem etc. The notion of safe land is rediculous as it's a safe shot that counts. And a shot can be safe one day and not the next.
I kept a record of the instances I rang, what land and what calibre. I had my permissions in writing. Police records of approved land are not always clear.
Sim G, if you have no land to shoot over you have no argument for open FAC, and without one permission...what good reason do you have for restricted FAC?

The places where I shoot vermin are invited by those who have the land as their permissions. I do so with a shotgun.Robin128 wrote:

My FAC is mainly for target and collecting, except for the S1 shotgun that also has birds and ground vermin as a condition. My good reason as far as the app is concerned is as above! I get invited regularly to shore with mares over land currently approved. They will attttest to this, however, they are adamant that they will not share their permissions, so to speak. That, I perfectly understand considering the situation as far as suitable land is concerned in the South East.....

Re: Open ticket........ no land previously!
My Police Authority provides forms to get permissions in writing signed by landlord and tenant stating what calibre, type of gun and what quarry.
The law states you need lawful authority...bet its advisable to get that in writing.
When you are invited to shoot with your mates who have written permission...shouldn't you have landlord/tenant's permission also???
If someone's cow or combine harvester gets shot, what position do you think his insurer will take??? I mean, if the finger is pointed at you?
And what about BASC insurance if you cannot prove you were law abiding?
