Deer Stalking… reliable word of mouth recommendation from someone you know has undertaken such stalking being offered by a specific syndicate is best. Like other walks of life, stalking has its scammers. E.G., make sure there is deer, of the species sought, on the land being made available; that appropriate insurance is in place; that there is recourse for recompense if it all goes wrong. In addition, obtain and understand terms and conditions; consider the implications of allowing a syndicate leader to be a FAC mentor; make sure ‘coaches’ are suitably qualified; consider the quality of deer management, the construction & execution of a shooting plan and safety; determine if the land is over-shot.

If in doubt, contact BASC or similar.

Buck Pak Lite Large Skinner

#1 Post by j2112c »

I have just received my Buck Pak Lite Large Skinner today, well I ordered the black one but was sent the stainless silver one instead... so I will get to see both as the replacement will be here tomorrow. :-P

This is it..

It is also available in this colour:

Just to say I was very pleased with the knife. It is light, though retains the feel of a substantial and quality item. I found the balance point to be just in front of forefinger groove, total length 8 inches with a 3.5 inch blade. In the hand it feels handle heavy due to the balance being just afore the hand... Up turned for skinning it is advantageous as the handle falls into the hand, lifting the blade up.

I found a way of handling it so you can use the base to whack anything HARD (if you fish perhaps) or in my case everything from tent pegs to refitting my car wing mirrors (I know I am such a ludite!).

Its whole construction is 420HC stainless steel and no material handle to get mucked up.

My only reservations are the holes will need a good cleaning to ensure they are properly cleaned and the sheath, though very nice with the plastic insert it retains the usual Buck issue of the retaining flap being inline with the withdrawing blade... wait for the fraying. Why can they not change this silly niggle? Twenty years and counting.

It came as with all Buck Knives as sharp as a scalpel. It makes me wonder why I paid three times more for another Buck 15 years ago with similar blade length... knives for life, I suppose they owe me nothing. I have far too many knives military and survival (I think it is an obsession, I hope shared!).

If you see one, check them out and see what you think.

Prices are about £25 here in the UK. I will let you know what the black finish is like when I see it and update after it gets properly battered.

I am not related to Buck, their distributors nor do I sell them.

John,

I have been using one for sometime now, it is a useful knife and does its job well - my only gripe is the belt loop - it is too small and too tight, but goes in a pocket well.

Cheers, thanks for the feedback, I will go and have a look at the loop now! :good:

How do you find the fastener? I get a bit bugged by Buck.. it is always safe and sturdy, but it always is in line with the blade edge meaning extra care not to slice it...

Cheers mate.

No problems with the fastener and no signs of wear - it gets pretty much daily use for preparing food for my birds, skinning and gutting without any issues.

It fits the hand nice and is safe to use

Do you wrap the handle with paracord or similar or leave it as it is?

Leave it as is - the top of the handle is ridged as is the bottom and the cut outs are ideally place for finger/thumbs to hold the knife in different positions to carry out different tasks.

It is well balanced and dishwasher safe!

I agree they are good knives, but it is about £130 whereas the Buck is £25, it is inexpensive and there is no handle to get messed up with blood and stuff.

I have quite a few, conventionally handled knives, but it is nice to try something a bit different. :D

............£65 care of ebay US. I also have the F1 which was about the same money.

The skeleton knife fad is an old one. Many mates found out their detriment their limitations - especially when hands are covered in blood and s***, without a tactile grip to hold.
