Plinking load for 308 ~

I'm interested in a light load for my 308 rifle, for 50yds and 100m plinking.

The bullet is Hornady 150gr FMJ/BT.

Powder, open to suggestion, in stock: N140, N310, Bullseye, TiteGroup, and Green Dot.

Any guidance or pointers on a lighter load than the N140 44gr I would normally use.

You do not say at what distance you are plinking. I shoot with 41 grains of N140 for plinking to a couple of hundred yards.

I'd go a different route and use light weight cast boolits with light loads of pistol powder.
Lyman's Cast Bullet Manual would be useful as a starting point.

50yds, or 100m... no further, sadly (for plinking).

That's what I was wondering about... (pistol powder).

Where would be a good place to obtain such boolits..?

Shell house bullet company make a 110gr RN cast bullet sized to .309". I use this bullet in my M1 carbine, not sure if this will be too light for 308 or not?

You may want to read up on "The Load" which is located in the library of this forum as there is a lot of info regarding the use of pistol powder with military calibres such as 30'06, 8mm Mauser etc. If I recall, the load was based on red dot powder.

Four grains of any fast pistol powder, N310, N320, Bullseye, Red Dot under a well fitting for you rifle soft lead bullet in the 90-130 gn range, heavier that is longer bullet for 100yrds plus.

A search of these forums will reveal much on this subject as it has been done to death on here at various times in the past.

For 50 metres and 100 yards I shoot the lee 150 gr flat nose with vectan gm3 for 1800 fps and consistent sub moa accuracy. Per round this costs less than a jacketed bullet and doesn't wear the barrel. I shoot around 2000 rounds per year with cast with jacketed bullets reserved for 200 yards +.
