Hodgdons 4895 and the Ban
Hi
I'm getting to the end of my stock of H4895 and need to move to a replacement,non-banned, powder.
I'm hoping to get some advice on here from more experienced reloaders! My issue is that I do most of my shooting on a range with muzzle velocity and energy restrictions. When I first started reloading I was advised the H4895 could be loaded to reduced levels as it is the slow burning propellant that ignites uniformly in reduced charges down to 60% of its maximum charge (https://imrpowder.com/wp-content/upload ... -loads.pdf).
I'm looking for recommendations please for a suitable replacement powder.
Thanks in advance (I did do a search before posting but didn't find an answer on here)

Your calibre and bullet weight would help.

It's .223 and either 55gr or 69grphaedra1106 wrote:Your calibre and bullet weight would help.

how slow do you need to go? and what range are you attempting ? reloder7 is very good for .223 and can be reduced although not as far as 60% I fear,

I use 22gns Vit133 with 69gn SMK and it's producing 2840fps which is 1675 joules out the barrel

The range limit is 2150 ft/sec and 1496 ft/lbs, any bullet weight below 150 gn only needs to meet the muzzle velocity. Currently using 20.1 gn of H4895 which gives a velocity just a tad over 2000 ft/sec.kennyc wrote:how slow do you need to go? and what range are you attempting ? reloder7 is very good for .223 and can be reduced although not as far as 60% I fear,
So my target speed is about 2000 ft/sec!

Calling out for cast lead, reloder7 or unique (or one of several other powders) with 55gn bullet will give in the region of 17-1800 fps for between 7 and 12 grains of powder
