.303 Match Rifle Load??

Can anybody give me the starting and maximum parameters of using a Flat Base 220 Grn .311 (B&S Products) bullet in my .303 Steyr Match rifle?
The barrel is marked for .215 Grn bullets but I reckon the 220 Grn should work well, I normally use N140 for most of my reloading but am open to advice regarding other powders.

Thoughts?

No thoughts other than N140 might be a bit quick for such a weight bullet. I will watch this thread with interest.

I have used N160 when I owned a Long Lee, I sold the rifle half way through experimenting with a round nose 215 Grn bullet from the same people.

N160 worked a treat with 39 Grn's under a 174 Grn SMK, although it was very accurate out to 300 yards it was a disaster at 500 and 600.

Perhaps I should be looking at N160 instead? :?:

I am not familiar with the Steyr 303 match rifle details please.

Does it have the heavy BSA barrel.

Yes a BSA barrel but In an HBSA Match this would be regarded as a "Light" class.

With heavy 220 gn cast boolits I've had good luck with AA 4350 and I am dabbling with VV N560.

Around 42 gns AA 4350 will give arond 2,200 fps with no pressure sign and a damn near full case but you can get a bit more in with a bit of compression and get up to just over the 2,300 fps mark but watch for pressure sign and work up in .2 gn increments. Case base measurement is fiddly but better than just looking at primers.

With VV N560 45 gns give the 2000fps mark without pressure sign and room for more powder so I still need to work that up a bit more not sure how that powder will respond to compression.

I'm using PPU LR primers, they can be a bugger to seat but are giving me the lowest SD.

BTW B&S draw and swage a canny boolit using British kit by NALAN.

I was going to get a couple of hundered of the heavy round nose .303" bullets for my Long Lee Metford from them when I was at Bisley the other weekend but for some reason failed to do so. :(

When I went to get them we ended up talking about tax bills and I came away empty handed. :G

If I could remember that I had a memory then perhaps I would use it.

I notice that H4831 and N560 have very similiar burn times; I have also found some published loads for .303 215Grn bullets with H4831 which given I'm using a 220 Grn bullet ought to be 10% less as a starting point? :-P
