Re loading 38 special
I spent to day messing with my 38 special re loading gear. Yes I know it was fathers day but I aint got time for all that crap.
I started off sizing with a NDFS die which was OK but slow because they are not carbide so I switched to a Lee carbide sizer de capper.
I then primed using a Lee auto prime one of the original ones not the new version. The next job was to expand the case mouth the NDFS (North Devon Shooting Services) expander die is a cracker its the best expanding die I have ever used for 38 special it did a great job.
Powder choice proved a bit of a challenge I have lots of vitavouri powders but I could not find any suitable load data for undelever rifle.
I eventually went with Unique I used the data from the Lyman cast bullet hand book. I used a Lee powder measure the one I have is a one off it works with the auto disc thingies but the powder measure is free standing and works by operating a hand lever. I have never seen another example of this powder measure in the whole of my shooting career. I cant even remember were I got it. I might post a picture.
Any way I seated the bullets using the NDFS seater die then crimped them with a Lee crimp die.
A good day I just need to go shoot them now. The whole of re loading process was carried out using my Wamadet press sat at my computer desk.
I used 4.4 grains of Unique does any one have any load data you can share for the Vitavouri powders in 38 special for underlever rifles to be used on a 25 yard in door range..

Re: Re loading 38 special
Unfortunately no load data for Vit powders but -- well, that sounds an awfully slow way to load .38 spec rounds for an underlever. Why not just use the Lee dies?
I know the measure you mean, although not seen one for years. For my gallery rifle rounds I use a Lee turret and auto-disc measure. Turns out good ammo quick and easy.

Re: Re loading 38 special
Im not in any hurry. I dont like turret presses. Had one got rid of it.
Re: Re loading 38 special
I used to load with Vit310, very clean burning and gave great results, but only loaded .357

38 spl load I use is 3.2gr of Howitzer Zero. Pretty much on a par with Viht 310. This is with a 150gr pill
Purveyor of fine cast boolits.
All round good guy and VERY grumpy old man.

Sounds like a cross between the Perfect Powder Measure and the Delux Perfect Powder Measure.Alpha1 wrote: I used a Lee powder measure the one I have is a one off it works with the auto disc thingies but the powder measure is free standing and works by operating a hand lever. Hi Alpha,
I have used N320 in the past to good effect - something like 3.4 under a variety of heads (but check Viht load data).
This was a free tub to me, as I normally use HP38 (again, circa the same charge weights) under a 158 LRN.
Usual caveats apply as with all load data.

Simon

Ah, "Lee Discontinued Products". That's why you never see them.1066 wrote: I believe this is the machine Alpha was referring to:

But, as an aside, the Perfect Powder Measure has been one of the most accurate measures I've used.
