Mauser K98 bolt. Advice needed please.
I have just got a Mauser K98 in 7.92 and although I know how to remove the bolt I don't know how to de-cock it once it's out. I don't think it would be good to store it cocked. Can anyone please tell me how to de-cock the bolt for storage once it's out the rifle?

Just remove the bolt from the rifle and lock it away in your cabinet or were ever you are storing it there is no need to do any thing to the bolt.

Springs are a strange science, they only wear when they are moving, static storage in any state is pretty irrelevant. You can easily uncock the bolt by holding it in one hand and twisting the cocking handle, the ball ache is recocking it before it goes back in the action.

If you are really concerned about storing the bolt out of the rifle then don't. Close the bolt on an empty chamber pull the trigger then store the gun with the bolt still in the rifle. Job done.

Or, close the bolt on an empty chamber whilst holding the trigger and it will decock. Doesn't help the OP, but is how I store mine.Alpha1 wrote:If you are really concerned about storing the bolt out of the rifle then don't. There is a good strip and de-cock article here

With modern steel maybe. WW2 Mags left loaded have lost their "eleasticity"
As mentioned before , keep the triger pressed when you remove the bolt.

Got excited there, so had to get the gun out and try it.. no good.froggy wrote: static storage in any state is pretty irrelevant

I can close the bolt with the trigger pressed and it closes decocked so I can store it..
But, holding the trigger whilst opening the bolt before removing it leaves the bolt cocked, so no good if you want to store the bolt away from the gun uncocked.
