Desert Island quandry

You are stuck on a desert island consisting of a flat area with water and fruit trees and a raised and an un-climbable plateau, sitting up the top is a huge wild goat, it has got to be good eating and you really are a carnivore at heart. One shot and it will roll down the plateau, onto a grass bank and land at your feet in good condition ready for the barbecue.

Now the good news is you have been washed up on the island with a very nice .308 rifle and yet to be mounted 'scope and rings in perfect condition and ready to go once you have fitted and zeroed it, the bad news is you only have one bullet and the shot is going to be around 800-1000 yards as the goat is out of sight if you walk to the base of the plateau.

So - the bullet is a factory Lapua 155 and is going to go bang, how do you confirm zero and then elevation and windage to have the confidence to take the shot, or do you save the bullet for a dark day and live on fruit until you are saved?

No, there are no Amazonian type women to take your mind off the goat and your stomach is grumbling just thinking about fresh meat.

Whatcha going to do?

Take the shot at a 1000 yards without the scope....hmm....?

If the Plateau is unclimbable, how did the goat get up there?

Any true Welshman would fire the shot to hit the rocks just behind the goat. that would frighten it just enough so it falls off and rolls down to his feet - stunned but generally OK. He is then well set up to carry on just as he would in the Valleys!

After reading Polchraines post, I can't concentrate on the shot for laughing........... and will probably never be able to make it as it will always pop into my mind when I tried!

More questions for Ovenpaa

Why have you only got one round - is the rifle a single shot TR?
Does it have iron sights?
How big is the plateau?
How high is the plateau?
Is there food for the goat on the plateau?
If the goat didn't climb (because it is unclimbable

) are you sure there's only one? It could have bred from a hitherto unknown species of plateau dwelling goat?
If there is only one goat, does mean it is an endangered species and what are moral implications of eating the last one when there is fruit to eat and food to be got from the ocean?
