Reducing recoil

Due to an injury to neck and shoulder I would like to know if any particular make and calibre of rifle offers less recoil than I am currently using . I am shooting up to 600yds using a Remington 700 .308 heavy barrel with accuracy int. stock and moderator .

Is there any better solution apart from taking up knitting.

Add a moderator to your current rifle, will feel like a .22LR

Seeing as you are already using a heavy setup (AICS, heavy barrel) with a moderator, I don't think there's much more you can do with that calibre. What mass bullets are you using? If you are using 175gr bullets you could possibly drop down to 155gr for a reduction in recoil. If possible, you could further decrease the velocity of 155gr.

The easiest thing to recommend is to sell your .308 (or rebarrel) for a 6.5 of some sort. You will enjoy a flatter trajectory with less recoil. My Remington 700 (6.5x47) with a 28" barrel in an AICS was quite timid even without the use of a moderator.

My other recommendation is the use of a recoil pad that you can slip over your shoulder. I had some nerve damage a few years ago in my right arm area and I used one of these pads when I was shooting my 8mm Mauser. Without it, I could only handle 15-20 full 8mm loads before my arm would start hurting, but after using the pad below I could shoot 100 in a day with no pain to my arm.

You're using a mod. so not much else you can do. Why not re-barrel it in 6BR - you'll end up with a more accurate rifle which will be a pussycat to shoot.

If you want to keep shooting at that distance then what Welshshooter says.

There are quite a lot of recoil pads on the market, some you fit on your shoulder, some sit on the gun.

Last time I used a recoil pad it was a sorbothane pad sitting on my shoulder, worked very well.

Some good suggestions there thanks . If I was going down the 6.5 route would the Ruger Precision Rifle with a moderator be ok or should I stick with Remington . I haven't seen a RPR up close so not sure .

Indeed. I've just bought one of those, to protect my right rotator cuff tendon from when I periodically suffer with tendonitis, and I've got it for mostly to use with the shotgun when clay bashing a couple of times a month, but will probably wear it for shooting my Lee-Enfield No.5, as they aren't known for being overly shoulder friendly

The SVD rubber butt pad has transformed my Swing 308...........feels like a 223 now.
The pad is designed to take the sting out of the SVD 7.62 x 54R.

Go down the Classic Rifle path with a nice Swedish Mauser in 6.5 Swedish! Failing that the recoil pad is your best bet.
