Bullet pointing

I have been looking at bullet pointing for a while, as much as I wanted to try it I invariably dismissed it as the equipment is so expensive. I took another look this week and this is the result. A Redding competition die converted to act as a bullet pointing die.

The pointing part is a sleeve, in this case for 7mm bullets, a die to form the point and an anvil to rest the bullet on in the press. This is a prototype so manufactured in aluminium and brass as it is quicker to machine, the hard part was grinding the cutter to form the cone in the pointing die. (bottom item in the top picture.

I will post the results tomorrow but so far it is looking good.

dave just be aware that when you order a whideen for instance they want to know what bullet you are using as well as calibre because the ogives will be different for specific bullets


when you are pointing tips the measurements are taking from the ogiive so one standard bullet holder/trimmer cant be used im afraid

Whidden originally supplied just the one tipping die however when Hoover released a version very shortly afterwards they listed different tipping does for different weights/makes of bullet. This system has been designed specifically for the 180 Hybrid's and were I to use the system for the 180 target or VLD I would need to build a differently formed tipping die.

Not a great picture but it should show work in progress. What I learnt very quickly is I cannot hand grind the cutter so I had to resort to chucking up a piece of tool steel and then turning a tip at the angle I chose (40 degrees) then polish the point and finally grind it back so it would act as a spear point cutter which involved me with a jewellers loupe in on eye and my nose fractions of an inch from a bench grinder. anyway this is the result so far.
