Misfires/hangfires - how long?
So, you've loaded a round into the chamber, pulled the trigger - and click.
How long have people actually experienced a misfire taking to go off (if it does eventually) ?
I know there are range protocols about waiting a certain length of time - but I would be interested to know if they are based on any actual known data - and is it different for rimfires and centrefires?

30 seconds is the recommended time to wait, then carefully open the bolt with the Palm of the hand.

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools!!

On the odd occasion I have had a miss fire I just kept the gun pointing down range and slowly counted to thirty. I have never had a miss fire go off after the click.
Re: Misfires/hangfires - how long?
As the others have said, I haven't actually experienced one going off after the click, I have also had the situation where the next round hasn't fed so the click is on an empty chamber, I have a lot of old bolt guns so maybe not a surprise.

Re: Misfires/hangfires - how long?
what is the protocol for misfire/hangfire in a practical comp, against the clock?
When guns are outlawed, only Outlaws will have guns
Re: Misfires/hangfires - how long?
I would expect it to be as above, wait 30 seconds and then open bolt from underside with palm of hand and keep your head back and left.
I have seen dubious origin MkVII Ball hanging for a good 30-40 seconds, it seemed like an eternity at the time.

Re: Misfires/hangfires - how long?
I've seen one single couple of second delay with old milsurp.
Re: Misfires/hangfires - how long?
have had a Sportco 7.62mm hang fire but it was the firing pin moving in 2 stages (click.tic ..bang) also had a P14 light strike because the bolt hood was fouling the bedded stock. Hang fires are not usually the ammo!

first time I had a moment, I just stood there with the gun, guy with the clock goes 'what are you doing!!, shoot!' i told him i had a misfire, he said rack it out, get on with it. totally different world from .22 prone, where you just sit and wait, then open and check.
