MOD Range FPS Limit

#1 Post by Christel »

Curious...why is it that on MOD land there is an upper fps limit?

On open land it does not apply as long as you have a permission.

There's no FPS limit on the MOD range I shoot on, just a max power limit?

Most I have shot on have 1000m/sec as a range limit with 4500 Joules before HME and places like Barton Road will not allow .338LM regardless.

3250fps on barrack and gallery ranges, field firing ranges and those with a limited danger area do not have a limit.

Why? Because it's the military and in my experience when "green army" is involved some stuff just becomes pointless...
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

I ended up selling a 375 H&H because it exceeded the maximum power limit for the MOD template.

After a couple of 'incidents' in the recent past, the military had to re asses the range templates of all of their ranges, which resulted in limited civilian shooting for a while, even though the 'incidents' were military ones they consider the civilian users to be the dangerous users of firearms, I digress, some have yet to be reopened to civilian use as of yet, and some have closed completely because they weren't able to conform to the new range safety limits for backstops and danger areas
It was at this time that the HME limits came to be! apart from the field firing ranges where they play with tanks and field artillery etc, and where the FCSA boys go and play
Also the powers that be in the military field have very little knowledge of any rifle calibers outside of 5.56, 7.62 & 338LM and have no interest to expand that knowledge as not required for the grunts

So basically the civilian shooters are restricted by military FUBAR's

Barton Road had a problem with a footpath encroaching the danger area by a dozen yards or so in the village of Coton IIRC. This resulted in the backstop being built up with railway ties/sleepers to make it high enough and increase (or should that be reduce?) the template to make it safe again. When this was found out and before the backstop build up we had to post a sentry on the foot path just like we had to for the one crossing the range in front of the targets, but unlike the other path this one only needed one sentry as he could sit and almost touch both ends of the path.
Arming the Country, one gun at a time.

Good deals with Paul101, Charlotte the flyer, majordisorder, Charlie Muggins, among others. Thanks everybody.

Bisley follows the same limits. So you can't shoot a .204Ruger there for pity's sake!

Nor a 22-250 and numerous others. It does mean the average vermin shooter is excluded from shooting his rifle at extended distances at paper and not all vermin shooters have access to land to test new loads. I have been out at night where a backdrop is a rise in the field and the nearest farm leaving his lights on so you know where to avoid. Shots are usually limited to down the middle of large nearly dry drainage ditches which are banked on the sides.
