Transporting Rifle on a small Car

A member of club has asked me to get an opinion on this......

They have a small 2 seat soft top girl magnet car...... & a target rifle that does not fit in boot & often has a 2nd person in the passenger seat so is considering this to transport their rifle (NB transport (drive to & from, not leave parked or store, or nip into shop / petrol). so swap the rifle case for the suitcase in the picture to see the set up.

They have secure store at the range.

The case locks & will be locked to the rack & the rack is locked to the boot lid & you cant remove it without opening the boot.

I'm not sure our finest motorway & road Black Rats will be that happy - what do you think?

I suggested a guitar case............& an estate car!

If it is all secured in place and the bolt and ammunition are stored separately and the vehicle is not left unattended I cannot see why it would be a problem however the case would need to be locked and very securely attached to the vehicle.

It is incumbent upon all FAC holders to take reasonable precautions in ensuring their firearms are secure including during transport, that is what the police/courts will ask in the event of a missing firearm.

My concern would be about security in the event of an accident or perhaps a long traffic hold up.

The person concerned will need to feel that the security is reasonable.

My main worry with the case would be water ingress.

Advise them to get rid of the motorised skate board and get a proper car. You know something that can carry you and your goods to where you want to go. Either that or give up rifle shooting and take up air or muzzle loading pistol that can be carried in the glove compartment sized boots of such silly "cars".

I would hardly think that a hard gun case fixed to a boot rack would be considered to be taking reasonable precautions as regards security.

My interpretation of keeping secure is to keep it out of sight.

Can it go behind the two seats, with a secure cord/cable attached to something solid in the vehicle?

## Just seen a motorcycle on M3 with a backpack rifle bag. Rifle is possibly secured to him so in the event of coming off it goes with him (to hospital)?!

If it's the MG pictured, it can't go behind the seats, that's where the engine sits.

In mine, I either have to have it in the passenger seat or, if it's my Rem 700 (26" barrel Police), it JUST fits in a soft case in the boot squashing the bag, or take another car.

They're the least practical cars in the world, but they can be a bit of fun, especially when you got 160BHP in a mid engined RWD car that weighs as much as my left leg...!

It'd probably be cheaper to buy an old beater you can chuck your gear in than a trailer/towbar for a sports car. not to mention it kinda ruins the sleek look of a sports car...
