Winchester scope attachment

A friend wants to fit either a scope or a Red Dot sight to his Winchester '94. I understand the '94 has a top eject port.

I therefore ask what any gallery riflers (sp) use on their '94 in the way of sight rails please?

Does a rail that sits in front of port require drilling?

I am only used to the Marlin side eject so this is a new world to me!
