SCC (Shooter Certification Card)

#1 Post by kevinww »

I've been looking for info on obtaining a SCC, but info seems to be a bit sketchy. However i booked the assessments through NRA and went to Bisley today to complete them, only having half an Idea what to expect.

So for any one else planning to do the assessments or looking for info, here is a quick overview of what to expect.

Assessment starts out with basic safety questions

What siren sounds at start and end of session and in an emergency.
What to do if the emergency siren does go off.
Basic weapon handling.
Misfire procedure and unloading a misfire.
Sight adjustment and understanding of MOA and basic question of how many clicks it would be for a sight change from one distance to another.
Clearing the firearm and proving its clear.

Once questions were answered we moved on to shoot.

Safe handling moving rifle to the firing point was observed, then shot 3 rounds at 100yds for a consistent group, but as long as you are on the target they were happy.
Clear and prove firearm is clear.
Finally handling when moving off firing point was observed.

That's it nothing to arduous, takes 10-15mins and card lasts for 4 years.

I would suggest that if you are going to do it for a scoped rifle that you also do iron sights as well or vice versa, as you only have to do the question and answer session once and pay one range fee, you then shoot both rifles one after the other. Rifles can be hired and ammo was supplied with the hire.

I hired an Enfield No4 for the iron sight shoot for a bit of fun and rifle was waiting for me at the firing point.

Basic cost was £25 per range and hire was £12 with ammo.

Our club does it for free for all club members and probationers. It sounds like that card would only be valid for Bisley to me whats all the Siren thing about.

At bisley a siren/hooter sounds to indicate the start/finish of shooting time I.e. start of day,end before lunch, start again after lunch and to end the day.The hooter is located at the NRA offices but can be heard all over the camp.

Ditto our club will provide a card if you have passed club sessions on both smallbore and high velocity shooting. Mandatory for shooting at bisley, the Phoenix meet in my case.

Curious as to why NRA at Bisley will sign this off in one range day - but some clubs require 8 separate shoots before it's issued?

You can't just pitch up and be certified, you have to be a full NRA member who has proved previous experience or have undergone NRA probationary training.

I'm so glad I don't shoot at Bisley.

Your loss. Iconic venue.

You need the SSC to shoot on any military range so not having one would seriously limit your options.

The card has to be signed off by your club Chairman so it's really down to him to decide what process he is prepared to put his name to.

It is valid for all MoD ranges, same as the one issued by your club (which is an NRA SCC but issued by your club in the NRA's name). It is only needed to shoot on MoD ranges (of which Bisley is one).

Incidentally your club issued NRA SCC can only be issued if your club has agreed to follow the Safe Shooting System as agreed by the club chairman and the NRA (and NRA probationary syllabus or their own NRA accredited course for new members) and how long it takes for a club to issue depends upon the club and the chairman being satisfied the training and the shooter are up to it.
It is paid for by the club's per capita charge to the NRA as part of their annual affiliation fees or as an extra £8.85 if that shooter isn't on the full-bore shooters list (submitted with the annual affiliation renewal).

My club does it in an evening session with written and practical assessments for every member. When did this come in then and how long before the NRA talk the government into making it compulsory to take a test (at bisley no doubt) before applying for FAC , I wonder>
