slug loadings

I loaded up some slugs the other day, using a BPI slug loading manual 4th ed.

12g fiochhi hulls, 24gr green dot and gualandi DSG slug (1 1/8oz) with roll crimp 67mm length

these were a bit hard on the shoulder in my single barrel, but weren't too bad out of my mka1919. but would prefer something a bit softer on the shoulder.

does anyone else load for these? what do you use?

can I drop the powder down a few grains safely? as I know shotgun loading is different to metallic cartridge loading.

Also, does anyone have data for BPI thug slugs? (1 1/8oz is that I have) there's nothing in that manual for them, and they show nothing on their website without buying the new one...

I was loading the 1 oz DGS slug with Universal clays. Carefully dropped it down 2 grains from the BPI slug manual load (having found much the same as you) and nothing exploded in my face, but obviously the official line on that is if you follow that you'll be picking bits of barrel out of your face.

Switched to N320 for supply reasons. Seems similar.

what load were you doing 1oz dgs slugs with n320?

i'm just about to buy some more slugs from siarm, so could always get 1oz'ers

I'm loading Lee 1oz slug with 20.5gns of Green Dot using a WAA12SL wad. Those slugs run well in a Benelli M2 and a Mossberg 930. I imagine 1 1/8 with 24 grains would be particularly "lumpy"!

The thug slug as BPI call it is the same one that Siarm supply them as the 32 gram deer slug.

how do you find the book loading for that? still heavy like the BPI?

as there is no point me loading up a load with the book load if its gonna hit my shoulder just as hard.

just been looking at this again, doing some maths

A bottle of powder will do about 200 cartridges - £35 wihtout post,
about £60 for 200 slugs.
then however much for hulls...say £20....
thats comes at £115 for 200.

so £57.5 for 100

so ammozone list S&B slug at £65 100 .

how long is 100 cartridges going to take? between 30 mins to an hour? is £7.50 worth the time??

assumption - ammozone price is correct and thats not a price for 50...

how much does it cost others that reload? and is my pricing way off?

I don't reload slugs I'm guessing that's something to do with shotguns. But I have been reloading centre fire ammo for a number of years. In the beginning I thought it would save me money but the more I learnt the more I reloaded. Re loading fascinates me I enjoy re loading as much if not more than the actual shooting. Does it save me money NO. Can I reload custom built ammunition for any firearm I own YES. Do I know what works and does not work in any firearm I own YES. Can I reload for any rifle I own to shoot indoors at 25yards or any were out to 500 yards. YES
It depends what you want out of it if you just want to save money then re loading is probably not the way to go.
