Is Short Siberia really 100 yards ?

#1 Post by TJC »

Hi,

If someone on here is more IT literate than myself can they please measure Short Siberia 100-yards on Google Maps for me please ? I've measured it a few times from just inside the roof of the firing point to the butts and again from the more visible prone position to the butts. I'm coming out with 110-yards which seems a bit odd and good to know given that's my zero.

I've checked every other range at Bisley and found them all to be within a few yards of their stated distance but would appreciate a sanity check on Short Siberia 100. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong.

Cheers

I believe you are correct - I've tried it with two good quality laser range finders and found it to be 109 yards from the benches.

Short Siberia really hasn't changed for many years until the recent revamp, so probably not too much of a problem in the past, but really not good enough now.

How can you compare 100 yard benchrest results with the rest of the world if your giving your self a 10% disadvantage.

Can you imagine the national swimming centre having 50 metre pools that are in fact 55 metres or a major running track where the 100 metres is 110.
You should be able to conduct an international benchrest competition by post, just the same as the NSRA .22 indoor leagues but you do need to start with a level playing field.

I believe the 200 yard point is well over distance and Stickledown firing points are at an angle to the butts so the distance depends on the target number you have.

I have a feeling Short Siberia is 100m from the wooden sleepers in front of the benches however I could be wrong.

It does work out about like that Dave but it think that's more luck than judgement. When the benches were put there I think we were still fighting Napoleon. :)

100m is 109.36133 yards

...according to Google.

Either way it is not correct.

I thought you I was going crazy when I measured it. Stickledown 800,1000,1200 are all spot on (elevation aside) and 300-600 on Century appear ok +/- a few yards. I couldn't see 100 on Century (perhaps my Bing sat image is out of date) so if someone could check that it would be great. Thx

IIRC the RHS of Stickledown is not quite square to the butts, so if you're unlucky you get a 30yd penalty.

My understanding is that NRA and MoD ranges have a tendency to use Meters and Yards interchangeably, hence the use of the term 'Mard'.

This is my favourite resource for measuring distances. It will do areas too:

I seem to recall that Ash ETR is Imperial out to 300 yards then Metric back to 600. It's a nightmare if you're shooting a competition and the targets are set to not fall when hit.

Coventry built a wonderful Olympic sized swimming pool accurately measured to 50 metre. Unfortunately they forgot to take into account the 50mm at each end for the timing pads. Coventry has the only Olympic sized swimming pool in the whole world that does not qualify for any Olympic events.
