VZ58 MARS 223 vs 7.62x39

#1 Post by Sixshot6 »

Hey guys I'm thinking of trading calibers for this platform. Do I stand to gain anything going from 223 to 7.62x39?

Bigger holes in your paper targets but nothing else IMO. loose distance and accuracy is very poosible.

If your only shooting 100-200 then you maybe correct, but for longer distance out to 4-600 stick with what you have, .223 plinking ammo Barnaul is a £1 cheaper than the same make in 7.62x39 if you do not reload.

You could say I'm biased but I would say go with 7.62x39, it's a good round out to around 300m (that said I can drop Fig11s at Sennybridge easily with irons with my 7.62x39 Romanian AKM) and it's what the VZ was originally chambered in.You may find you can use milsurp x39 mags which will probably be cheaper than .223 mags.I would say that with the type of rifle it is you won't necessarily be shooting for tight groups as such so I'd say go for milsurp x39 ammo at around £28 a hundred.

I have the 223 already but have got thinking about whether I should have gone the 7.62x39 route and I do have a source of barnaul that makes it worth it too.

I'd say stay with .223, it's a better round at longer distances.

But is a VZ really a longer distance rifle?.Much as an AK isn't it more of a relatively close range 'fun gun'?.

(cue irate VZ owners that shoot long distance competitions etc helpsign )

I'd go for the 7.62x39, it is a far more fun round than the boring fart of the 223, also the 7.62x39 case is near perfect for cast bullets.

I'm of two minds Dromia, do I hang around and wait for the proposed other systems coming like what low mills appears to be doing or do I get the 7.62x39 which is something I believe I should have done in the first place? I was obsessed with distance at the time but now realize I'm never likely to shoot further than 100-200 yards at best. Also I have sorta come up with a way to keep good zero on a vz58 with a scope. It involves using the ali fab defense forend, some Leupold QR rings and a scout style scope.... if I can find the Burris in the uk that is.
