Today I have been mostly..
Fitting a moderator to the #2 AI/AE - This is the son's rifle but it lives with me. The rifle has always been fitted with an odd from sight mount and I had never really looked at it closely however he recently decided to put it up for sale so the front mount really did need to come off. The thing was how to do it?
Here it is with the muzzle brake also fitted. A close look showed the sight post was pushed over the barrel and probably held in place with locktite A hair dryer played on the end for a minute or so allowed me to break the locktite and slide the post off, a quick clean up and this is what we had. Which set me thinking, I had a moderator, hmmm.... but was it the same thread? Yes it fitted perfectly so next job was turn the moderator guide bush down and screw everything in place. Job well done I think, downside is he is now not sure if he wants to get rid of it DOH! Cheers DM, your Mod has been pushed into service at long last!

Re: Today I have been mostly..
I was wondering where it was going to end up..
I think it looks much better with than without, give it a quick shot out the window and see what reaction you get!
Are you tempted to load some sub sonics, just for the silly grin when it go's phutt?

I have needed an excuse to build some .308 subs for ages, I should still have the load data somewhere. This is where everything went pear shaped, James came over and we fitted the mod together and I mentioned just how quiet subs would be and he just gave me a huge grin and said yes lets do that.Dangermouse wrote:Are you tempted to load some sub sonics, just for the silly grin when it go's phutt?
I best get some made before he sells the rifle. I can see that mod going on my rifle one day

Re: Today I have been mostly..
I would like to hear it, I wonder what kind of range you would get,
200 yards?
It would make an interesting McQueens set up,

I made up some 308 subsonics a while ago using the Hodgdon data for titegroup and 168gr A-Max bullets. Very pleasant to shoot and I was able to consistantly hit a fig 11 @ 200m - good fun.

Did you add any wadding such as Kapok and how many grains of Titegroup did you use?Sandgroper wrote:I made up some 308 subsonics a while ago using the Hodgdon data for titegroup and 168gr A-Max bullets. Very pleasant to shoot and I was able to consistantly hit a fig 11 @ 200m - good fun.

Re: Today I have been mostly..
8 grains of titegroup, 1080 fps - according to Hodgdon's data. I didn't use any filler, as titegroup is said to be insensitive to case position and it certainly worked that way for the 30 or 40 rounds I fired.

Re: Today I have been mostly..
i have been tempted for a while to make up some subs but have always been concerned about high pressures from flashover of the powder in the case, also im sure I read somewhere about loading the bullet backwards to aid its stability.
Still I really want to try some the mod I have on my AW is very quiet have a listen

What is a Sapper? This versatile genius condenses the whole system of military engineering and all that is useful and practical. He is a man of all work of the Army and the public ready to do anything or go anywhere, in short, he is a Sapper.

Nice :)
You need to get him a rear squeeze bag for the rifle, I use one with my AI and from memory it was under GBP15 filled

Re: Today I have been mostly..
I just updated the 190gn thread and something triggered a thought in my head, a lonely thought it was with no one to talk too,
Have I read somewhere, or did I dream it, that heavier bullets, because they are slower, are better for sub sonic ammunition - or is it just a case of it is more difficult to keep them super sonic?
