Longer distances with the 6mm

#1 Post by ovenpaa »

Time to build another rifle and we are talking about something 6mm based as this is one cartridge not in the cabinets, the problem is what to go for.

I am tempted to build something based on a necked down improved 7x57 with bullets in the 105 grain range however the choice is endless with Dasher, XC and SLR options so does anyone have any thoughts on the subject.

It will be a single shot action, the barrel needs to be kept to 28" and I really want to get the 105's moving so maybe even 3,250fps if possible.

What would be the expected barrel life on that .

The necked down 7x57 is aka the 244 Rem/6mm Rem. I haven't heard of an improved version but it's probably out there. If my 257 is anything to go by then I doubt you'll have any issues getting the velocity you're looking for.

At the moment I'm thinking about changing from the 257 to 6mm Rem or to the 7x57 just for the choice of bullets...

I keep looking at one of your Roberts Improved cases and thinking it is the way to go with a 6mm...

lol I see your head has been turned by a pretty case...or is the call of something different that tempts you?

My only concern would be barrel life but with the right ingredients I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Also, as it's going to be a single shot you've negated my second gripe about the 257 - magazine feeding or lack of.

Some articles for you:

Barrel life, not that fussed to be honest. To prove something is what I am interested in.

I have a 6mm SLR that I am very happy with.

Not gone beyond 1000 yet but it clearly is good for extending thr range.

Using 115g Dtacs at present but its also got a reamer especially for 105g I think.

Cases easy to form from 243 brass and dies from Redding....a low-effort wildcat.

Dave, did you look into the .243AI versus the SLR before making your decision?

Dave - you could read the two recent articles in Target Shooter - www.targetshooter.co.uk on the 6mm Smack and 6XC

But, as always, it's what you want it for? A play-gun or a serious comp. gun?
