Recommended scope for AI AT

#1 Post by Geek »

Dear all,

Advice sought from those with much more experience than myself.

I have just ordered an AI AT with the following specification (collect in a couple of weeks): .308 26" barrel, folding Stock (Green), tactical muzzle brake.

The rifle will be used as a general purpose ‘do it all' .308 – target, tactical rifle / F class competitions (its the taking part that counts) at Diggle and Rossendale and at ranges from 100 yards – 1000 yards.

Whilst almost everyone wants an S&B PMII (myself included), new they are outside my budget: therefore what would you recommend secondhand S&B (if one can be found), Nightforce, etc.

No problem with buying secondhand.

Thank you
Regards,

Geek

AI AT (.308/6.5CM), Ruger PR (6.5CM), American Rimfire (.22LR), Remington 700 (.223), Marlin underlever .38/.357/.44, Savage 6BR, RimfireMagic .22LR, Fabarm Lion (s1), Fabarm Axis Baikal S/S

Nightforce would be my pick but the Vortex warranty is unrivalled. Personally, I would take a new one of these over a second hand S&B.

I have a Vortex PST 2.5x10x32 on my Steyr AUG and I am most impressed, model as link below:

Which model of Nightforce would you recommend? From what I have read (and tried to a limited extent), for long range shooting First Focal Plane is recommended and Nightforce only make one The BEAST which is more expensive than a S&B PMII.

I stuck a Kahles K624i with the AMR reticle on mine, I'm very happy, the build quality is superb. I would say the glass is as good as the PMII but considerably cheaper at £1,900 but have been seen for £1,700 second hand. It has mil turrets/reticle, zero stop, FFP.

What's your budget for a scope?

I could reach £1800 or just over wouldn't want to go over £2K - just spend a fortune for the AI!!

Where I am purchasing my AI, they have offered a secondhand Nightforce for £900, similar to this, not sure yet of full specification or reticle:

The rifle is a Birthday present to myself, just don't want to rush just because I have bought the rifle and spend the money on the wrong scope.

They were £2,421.00 until just recently and they're now available for £1,895.00, which isn't too far away from your budget.

I believe the reticle is in the second focal plane.

HALODIN - thank you for the assistance, would you say in your opinion not to consider anything unless FFP?

My Viper PST on my Steyr is FFP, not sure if FFP or SFP when shooting F Class at Diggle using the Osprey rifles Savage Arms (rented) which has a March scope (shot the 300 and 500 yard comps).

Sure that I have read somewhere that you need to try the scope before you try, at least look through it.

The problem with SFP is you can't use the reticle to measure distances at all magnifications, without mental arithmetic and/or changing the magnification. You'll have to work out whether that's important to you considering how you want to use the scope. FFP is certainly better and I decided this was important to me, which is why I bought the Kahles.

I would say zero stop and matching turrets and reticle (both mil or moa) are very important. What I didn't want to do was make another mistake by trying to save money on a scope, it costs you more in the long run.
