FMJ or expandible bullets

As a newcomer to full bore rifle shooting I simply buy and load 150 grain FMJ for my .308.The rifle I use is a standard
Remington 700 sporting rifle.I only usually shoot to upwards of 200 yards. I have now put in a variation for another .308
target rifle which I am hoping to be able to use at longer ranges. My question is would a heavier bullet be more beneficial.
I read on this and other forums that 168 or 175 grain bullets stay the distance better,the problem I have is that I cannot seem to find those weight bullets which are FMJ. Most are soft point or hollow point. Would these be deemed by the police as expandible bullets,which I do not have on my ticket

Personally I dislike 167/168's for anything over 600 in a .308. My preference is 155 Lap Scenar in a 1:12 twist barrel which works nicely for me, I have tried others but always come back to the 155 Laps which work comfortably from 100 to 1000 yards.

You should be hearing from the 'heavy' mob very shortly who can tell you more about the 175-190's and heavier.

The heavy bullets you describe would certainly be described as expanding ammo for hunting large game .
Sierra Match Kings are supposedly the best in 155 grain these were designed in the US for the Palma match competition .

Lapua Scenar, Sierra match king and other target bullets are hollow point but not expanding therefore no special authority is required to acquire them, and yes 155 gr will get you out to 1000 nicely.

These are not deemed expanding. Sportsmans will post them to you without sight of FAC, unlike expanding (eg Hornady V-max) which I have to buy over the counter... showing FAC allowing their use.

What is the maximum distance you have shot the 168gr Matchkings to, I use them but so far only out to 300yrds, would like to try further. Any advice would be helpful.

Many years ago I bought some 168grn IMI,(samson) 308win Match cartridges. They were very accurate and the bullets most definitely hollow point though not classified as Expanding. I believe the hollow point was used to shift the Centre of gravity rearward to optimise the bullets potential accuracy.
