Given the age of the gun, he COULD have legally had it on S.7 Exemption at one of the designated Heritage Sites.

LOTS of such things are still out there & more will appear in the next 5-10 years are the last of the WW2 veterans leave us & relatives turn up to do house clearances, etc.
I know of one such instance - an old WW2 Home Guard chap took his issue gun into a museum, as it'd been in his wardrobe drawer since 1945.
Must have been a big drawer as the gun was in the wooden storage chest, with the 100-rd & 50-rd drum mags...a 1928 Thompson no less. MINT.

If only the courts were as heavy handed with burglars....
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Guns dont kill people. Dads with pretty Daughters do...!

Drink drive, kill someone, suspended sentence. Have an illegal gun 3years.

Our sentencing guidelines need a complete overhaul.

Why pick on burglars?
They've got a crack habit to feed...

Irrespective of the issues with our justice system, if you've got an illegal firearm in your home you're taking a risk and you've got to expect to pay the price if you're caught.

This chap had a handgun and ammunition at home and he also left it out of the cabinet overnight so it seems.

I feel for the guy, clearly an enthusiast but the facts on the ground are that he couldn't be trusted to lock up a handgun and ammunition. Never mind the fact it was an illegal weapon, even if it had been a legally held one he'd still have lost his license for failing to secure it.

At the end of the day he's acted irresponsibly on several counts and as a result tarnished the reputation of the sport. I don't see why we should be championing his cause.

He has paid a high price, but it was illegal and he knew it. With the hysteria wiped up in the media concerning firearms it was going to be a jail sentence. He was a firearms enthusiast there was nothing to stop him collecting them legally, deactivated or sec 7.
