Bring items back from the states

Just a quick question, my sisters off to new york and San Francisco in February for a little vacation and just needed to know, if there were any issues bringing back a red dot site.

Fancy the vortex strike fire 2, any advice welcome smile2

I would say no problem with this.
I would bring one back.
There is loads of stuff I wouldn't bring back from the US that I would have done 3 years ago.
Thee is someone on the bay in the UK selling them for £160 all in.

Cheers tony, could only find the strikefire on bay and not the 2, although I believed the strike fire 1 were priced at £130, will however have to take another look.

Due to the above question, I wasn't sure wether she could get into trouble with this wrapped in a towl in the suitcase smile2

TSA advice for scopes is not to put it in your suitcase, safer (less chance of damage) to put in in your carry on bag.

There's no problem under ITAR with "normal" scopes for sporting use only those designated for military use so no night vision etc.

Is there a list of manufacturers/models which are considered 'military' though as a guy at 3 Counties had an Aimpoint taken off him (although he managed to post it back to the shop he bought it from and get a refund) and it wasn't a NV compatible one

You would have thought so but I've never been able to find one. ITAR is a minefield (no pun intended!) and unfortunately 99% of US sellers like Sinclairs, Midway etc. take a blanket approach and simply refuse to export scopes or other items they think may be covered when in fact they aren't. There are a couple of Leupolds I came across once that are regarded as military but I can't remember the exact models.

Fortunately (in my experience) the TSA seem to take a more sensible approach when inspecting luggage, we've had ours inspected almost every trip and so far the only thing they've removed was Birchwood Casey brass case cleaner as it'd a Hazmat problem, makes nasty fumes if it makes contact with aluminium.
