Spotting Scope

#1 Post by DW58 »

I've never bought a spotting scope before having always used those belonging to clubs/friends/school/cadets etc.

I need to buy one for full-bore range work out to 600m and possibly further, but as Glen Tilt has electronic target/scoring I guess 600m is probably the longest distance I'll regularly need to use it at.

I'm looking for recommendations - can't afford really expensive German/Austrian optics - that kind of money is reserved for telescopic sights, but I'm not looking for cheap and nasty either.

I'd be grateful for any recommendations.

Thanks

Kowa TSN-600 or TSN-660 are pretty good mid-range scopes. I've used one for nearly a decade and I'm very satisfied.

I popped in here at the weekend http://www.cleyspy.co.uk/pre-owned-telescopes-c21.html. They have a good reputation in the bird watching world (feathered variety!) and have a good selection of s/hand stuff.
I had a look through a few scopes and this one was particularly impressive for the asking price.http://www.cleyspy.co.uk/used-opticron- ... i6236.html I couldnt really see any difference between it and a Nikon that was twice the price but it was a very bright day and I am no expert in optics.

I've said this before - I'm a Kowa user (great 'scope) but, for £295 Fox Firearms Chinese Nikula scope matched the Kowa. Unbeatable value!

I use an old Spetsnaz issue spotting scope, it is a 3-20x magnification with a 300-2600m rangefinder and has a mounting attachment that that allows it to be clamped to something and also incorporates a screw adapter so it can be screwed into a tree or something similar. The optics are very clear and it is built like a tank.

Aldi have spotting scopes in for £20 recently, 20-60x,

Haven't tried it past 200 mards but it worked well for me,

I know the general rule with glass is you pay for what you get, but hey I'm on a tight budget and it's worked out for me so far.
