Krag-Jørgensen in 6.5x55 flavour

Hi everyone!

I was wondering whether anyone had any experience with the above rifle, specifically in 6.5x55. They're an interesting looking piece and I can't say I've ever seen one in the flesh but I would love to hear a bit more about them. How common are they in the UK? The 6.5x55 calibre sounds ideal as it's still readily available. Also what sort of price range are they going for?

We have a Noggin Krag in 6.5x55 and find it to be a very good rifle. The action is very smooth, probably as good as anything we own, and the sideloading magazine amazes everyone. It looks as though it shouldn't work but it does, and superbly. Just open the lid, drop in a pawful of cartridges and slap it shut. The guides align and feed the rounds flawlessly. Our rifle has a part worn barrel (it's into its second quarter for you artillery types) but it is very accurate over iron sights out to 300 mards with 1955 military surplus ammo. We haven't shot it at greater distances.

They are superb rifles with a reputation for accuracy. Back in the '50's the majority of Norwegian hunters used the Krag-Jørgensen rifles, usually in 6,5x55SE converted to single shot. The reason for the single shot modification is they were hunting Reindeer which tend to herd together so the single shot meant reloading took longer and gave the Reindeer a more sporting chance. Such rifles seldom leave Norway.

Oddly enough I was asked if I knew of any here in the UK earlier this week, the easy answer is no. They do exist over here however they are few and far between. I know of a collector in the Cambs area with a few and they are not going anywhere, I also know of a Danish Krag for sale (8x58RD) over here however it is silly money.

You do sometimes see the US Krags in .30-40, there is one for sale in Wales at the moment if I recall, however, expect to by over a grand for one.

South Yorkshire Shooting Supplies had two in stock a couple of weeks ago, but they were in .30-40 rather than 6.55

I have recently seen a 6.5 KJ come up, I'll see if I can dig up the link when I get home. Price was around £750 IIRC.
