Where Can I Shoot?
I've been offered the chance to shoot on someone's personal range for zeroing & load development but I'm not sure I'm legally allowed to do so.
According to my ticket I am a "Target Shooting - HO Club Member"
My ticket goes on to state that whilst I am a member of clubs "A" & "B" I can shoot various calibers I own "on ranges where a safety certificate for that class of firearm has been issued by the ministry of defence or on ranges suitable for the safe use of that class of firearm & for which adequate financial arrangement are in place to meet an injury or damage claim"
The range in question is on a farm, the farm in question is owned by the person that has invited me to shoot there & the land on which the range has been constructed is cleared for the calibers in question.
If the owner of the farm has public liability insurance am I legally authorised to shoot at paper targets there?
If the owner of the farm doesn't have public liability insurance is the cover I automatically receive as a member of BASC sufficient to cover me?
I'd love to have a bit more flexibility on where I can shoot targets but not if it's a grey area that may lead to me loosing my ticket.

Re: Where Can I Shoot?
You need to ask yourself has the farm range been constructed in accordance with recognised guidance such as the construction notes provided by the NRA or Army, or is it merely an improvised zeroing range built to no particular standard.
Has any sort of certificate of conformity been issued for this range?
If your FAC is conditioned purely for target shooting with the conditions you mention then surely your BASC insurance will not cover you if you are not complying with these conditions!
Why don't you ask BASC on this matter but I fear that their answer will be no.

Re: Where Can I Shoot?
If you get permission to shoot on his land you're entitled to zero your rifle, there are no specifics about that but the regs clearly state there is no regulation of number of shots allowed. Imho you're fine with the right permission so long as it's not setup specifically like a target range.
Obviously worth asking your FLO or BASC etc

Re: Where Can I Shoot?
My first thought is if some one made me a similar offer. I would not post it on a public forum that every body and his dog has access to.
But to quietly make enquiries as to the legal and insurance issues.
Especially as you may get the Guy who Genuinely ie the Farmer made you the offer in a lot of trouble.
If any of my local farm owners want to make me a similar offer I assure you of my absolute discretion.

Re: Where Can I Shoot?
My view is no, you cannot shoot there however a quick chat with your FET might get this resolved very easily.

Re: Where Can I Shoot?
If you do get an 'official' answer to this please post it as its an interesting grey area. Personally i'd say that if you've got permission to shoot there and have insurance then its legit

Re: Where Can I Shoot?
If the "range" is certified by the military, the NSRA or the NRA - and the official bit of paper has been issued saying so - then yes, otherwise no. Simples.
Re: Where Can I Shoot?
Why no though gaz? The guidance doesn't stipulate what you must or must not use to zero when you have permission to shoot over land. Only that you can zero and have no clear guidance on the number of shots

Re: Where Can I Shoot?
Does not the permission itself need to be listed on the licence...?
I was offered permission to shoot a few years ago, but since it was over 150 miles away, I never got round to putting in the paperwork.... I would assume you need a variation to list the land so it's listed on your certificate to shoot over, even to zero, because you'd theoretically be zeroing to shoot things on that land, not just generally zero'ing the rifle, you'd need permission for game on that land too? no?
Unless you have an open ticket, do you not need the land listed?
Have I missed something?
TL:DR - No, I don't believe you can just shoot.
