Large calibre rifles for deer stalking.

#1 Post by dodgyrog »

I'm having my FAC renewed and have pointed out the Home Office guidelines to the Firearms Licencing Dept that I am permitted to use my .416 Rem Mag and 9.3 x 74R for stalking once I have established the good reason for having them (shooting overseas). The Manager wants a chat with me!!!
I'll keep you lot posted.

Look on the bright side Rog, if you miss and hit a small tree it will probably kill the beats when it falls on it!

You may find that the damage caused is unacceptable...make sure its a head shot.

Very little damage with 9.3x74r. It wouldn't be my choice for muntjac or roe but is quite good on the larger species of deer.

There is no upper limit for deer stalking, regardless of what you're local licensing office would have you believe. Just as long as it conforms to the min velocity/joules.

They really don't know how to interpret metric either. Mine really got their knickers in a twist over my 7x64 and 375 h&h.

yep, any calibre goes really. Friend of mine got a 45-70 on his ticket, and I know plenty with 375H&H. Just be up for a reasoned discussion and if you already have two deer rifles they then get stressy having another.

Why you'd want to beat yourself up with one is anotehr matter as a wounded red is not too likly to come and gore you and you party.

The 45-70 stops pigs. Meat damage was huge. One was eviscerated. one was arseless.

The meeting is postponed until 09.30 this morning.
The discussion may well go around ACPO Ltd's guidelines as opposed to the Home Office ones.

As expected ACPO Ltd held sway.
That said the Firearms Licencing Manager was extremely helpful and agreement (amicable) was reached.
The only down side is that the condition for 'All Legal Species' is not in their remit to grant. ACPO Ltd again.
Still, all in all a very satisfactory outcome including the large calibres.

Thanks to Durham Constabulary Firearms Team and especially Laraine. :D :D :D
