Bragging Rites (Other Forum)

#1 Post by Stuck »

Although this forum has it's moments it isn't full of wiffy stuff.

On a forum that shall remain nameless there is currently a thread about folks shooting a Parker Hale .308 out to 1600 Yards & hitting a 4" square plate.

I know there are some seriously good shots on this forum but could you make that shot with a .308?

I shoot F/TR & do ok but I don't think I could hit a 4" target with a .308 at that range.

any????

Fig 11 at 1000, I run out of skill after that.
The above post probably contains sarcasm or some other form of attempted wit, please don't take it to heart.

Enough ammo and enough time , yes I could probably hit a 4" target at 1600yds but it would be entirely luck !

More to the point, what's the "best" scope available? Could that pick out a 4" plate at 1600yds? Hitting it at 600 would be 2/3 MOA. 1600yds, 4 inch plate? Nah, I don't reckon so.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Scopes not an issue (there's plenty of big uns available), having the target on a background that you can see fall of shot is more important, enough rounds in the area one is bound to connect eventually ?

Hit it once? Maybe. Hit it reasonably consistently, better than 50% of the time? Bullshit.

That's 1/4moa moa, which means that you've got to be able to hold less than 1/4moa and read wind to less than 1/4moa. There are f-class shooters who can probably do the first, but certainly not the second at that kind of distance. If they can do this at 1600 yards, how about they come and demonstrate on Stickledown at a piddling 1,000 yards an invite some witnesses along to play too?

I'd be impressed with a higher than 1-10 hit rate !

Not on my best day, with the most precise dopping chart and powerful horus scope. There was a time when I shot many 308 rds on a weekly basis. There was a reason we mostly trained out to 800yds, rarely out to 1000 and almost never beyond.

At 1600. Yds the bullet is decelerating like hell and has the flight tradjectory of a brick. Then consider the wind drift....at 1600yds I should really say winds; many winds in different strengths and directions, downdrafts, updrafts.......

A regular BSA in 308 has a barrel that'll get 3 rds at best before it gets hot and opens up......3 rds at best to get on target....aye right. I think you should invest in some decent wellies if visiting that forum. The bullshit must be deep!
