legal question for every shooter

#1 Post by the running man »

ok, hot topic. if a member of a club went home and left a firearm at a range or "site" ,then somebody came along discovered the firearm contacted the owner and was embarrassed but reunited with his/her firearm, would the club or individuals involved in trying help out be then complicit with any type of crime? ie the owner has knowingly broken firearms law by leaving the gun unattended, are then those individuals or even the club breaking any kind of law by with holding information about a crime or perverting the course of justice? has anyone got anything to throw into this..

Securing lost property and restoring it to rightful ownership ought not to be an issue, oomans.

As long as someone at the range secured it then it wouldn't be an issue for me. This is why ranges have ROs and various guidelines. So that if anyone does make a daft, non malicous, mistake it can be picked up and dealt with. I'll bet they would never forget it again!! Oh the shame!

How could anyone secure it? If its not on your ticket then your in possesion of an illegal firearm....

At the end of the day on any range our club shoots on the last thing that happens is the range conducting officer walks the firing point and the range area to prove it is clear. He then appoints a second person to re check in case he has missed any thing its surprising what people forget. Only after the check is carried out will he sign the range off.
I some times think shooters are there own worst enemies. What you should be doing is kicking the arse of who ever was in charge of your range.

Yep, you would strictly be in possession of a firearm without certification. However, I reckon you would have a defence under common law as opposed to statutory.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

I recall a thread on here a while back about a fella who found a shotgun at the bottom of his garden. He picked it up and took it to the cop shop, cops told him he should have called it in and let them lift it, there was some talk of him getting into trouble over it. So I guess legally, the correct thing to do is call the cops if it isn't yours. Not saying it's the right thing to do, just that it may be the legal thing to do.
