Component prices - taking the p***!

Just bought myself a rifle in 7mm Rem Mag and popped into a well known dealers near Glasgow for some components. I intended to buy some Large Rifle Magnum Primers, 139gr Hornady SSTs and some powder to work out my first load. Something to create a benchmark with.
Now I'll readily admit to being an infrequent reloader in comparison to many here but I nearly fainted when he slapped 1000 CCI magnum primers down and demanded £64! He started whining about the recession, them being a special order item and other crap when I challenged him, but I essentially told him what he could do with them and left without buying anything.
In your experience, what's a fair price for these primers?
Now that I need to source others and they can't be posted, can i get by with regular Large Rifle Primers?
Thanks

About 45 / 1000 seems to be about the going rate - did he order them in just for you? He's possibly added the shipping on to the price to you?

Nope. I was there to pick up the stainless moderator I had just bought from him.

Aye you can though it depends on what powder and bullet you are going to use. I have a couple of magnum rifles and the loads I use for them allow regular large rifle primers. With the SST's you should be fine. I use either Federal Match Primers or CCI Benchrest primers.

Jeez I thought I was hard done by, a 1000 CCI primers at my local shop costs just under £20 and I've been complaining about that price. Couple of years back I could have bought the same primers for around $15 which at today's exchange rate is just under £10. Believe it or not all these prices have nothing to do with Obama or the anti's causing panic buying and driving up prices, the prices always stabilize after a while after that BS.

Just looked at the Henry Krank 2013/2014 retail price list....
CCI Large Rifle Magnum; £38.50 per 1000
Remington Large R|ifle Magnum; £36.50 per 1000
Standard primers £4 per 1000 cheaper.
